1.3 Scoring System: Two Groups & the 30/50 Threshold Rule
Key Takeaways
Each skill is worth 25 points, and both 50-point groups require at least 30.
Grupo 1 is Reading + Writing; Grupo 2 is Listening + Speaking.
A receptive test score equals correct items × 25 ÷ 30, with no negative marking.
Holistic and analytic ratings contribute 40% and 60% in the productive tests.
Groups must be passed in the same session; a high overall total cannot rescue a failed group.
Score Each Group Separately
General DELE B1 has a maximum of 100 points, with 25 points for each test. Passing depends on two group thresholds, both achieved in the same examination session. An overall total alone cannot establish the result.
| Group | Tests | Maximum | Required minimum |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grupo 1 | Reading + Writing | 50 | 30 |
| Grupo 2 | Listening + Speaking | 50 | 30 |
Passing both groups necessarily produces at least 60 overall. There is no additional independent task of “finding 60” after the two group requirements are met. A candidate with 29 in one group fails even with 45 in the other. Learn the pairings accurately: reading does not combine with listening for this B1 qualification.
Convert Receptive Items to Test Points
Reading and listening each contain 30 scored selected-response items. Correct answers receive one raw point; wrong answers receive zero, with no deduction for an incorrect response. Convert a receptive raw mark by multiplying the number correct by 25 and dividing by 30.
| Correct items | Calculation | Points out of 25, rounded for illustration |
|---|---|---|
| 12 | 12 × 25 ÷ 30 | 10.00 |
| 18 | 18 × 25 ÷ 30 | 15.00 |
| 20 | 20 × 25 ÷ 30 | 16.67 |
| 24 | 24 × 25 ÷ 30 | 20.00 |
| 27 | 27 × 25 ÷ 30 | 22.50 |
| 30 | 30 × 25 ÷ 30 | 25.00 |
Twenty correct reading items therefore mean 16.67 points, not 20 points in the final group total. An ordinary raw score is an integer number of correct items; avoid creating imaginary reading marks such as 18.50 as if any decimal were possible. When practicing, retain the raw count and show the conversion so that the arithmetic can be checked.
There is no benefit to leaving an otherwise answerable item blank to avoid negative marking. If uncertain, eliminate options contradicted by the stimulus and make your best choice. In a three-option question, a uniform random choice has a one-in-three chance of being correct; this is not a prediction of your individual score. Matching pools have different numbers of alternatives and restrictions.
Compensation within a Group
One test can compensate for the other within its group. There is no separate 15/25 minimum for every individual test. Suppose a candidate gets 12 reading items correct: that converts to 10 points. A writing score of 20 then makes Grupo 1 exactly 30. The candidate still needs at least 30 in Grupo 2.
Conversely, a strong reading score cannot rescue weak listening when its own group is already passed. The rule measures two combinations of communication skills. Study the weaker combination rather than assuming your strongest receptive skill will support every other test.
Worked Outcomes
The productive marks below are illustrative results supplied for the exercise, not predictions from a self-rating.
| Candidate | Reading raw → points | Writing | Grupo 1 | Listening raw → points | Speaking | Grupo 2 | Total | Result |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Elena | 24 → 20.00 | 18.00 | 38.00 | 18 → 15.00 | 18.00 | 33.00 | 71.00 | APTO |
| Luis | 27 → 22.50 | 20.00 | 42.50 | 12 → 10.00 | 18.00 | 28.00 | 70.50 | NO APTO |
| Sara | 18 → 15.00 | 15.00 | 30.00 | 18 → 15.00 | 15.00 | 30.00 | 60.00 | APTO |
| David | 12 → 10.00 | 20.00 | 30.00 | 24 → 20.00 | 12.00 | 32.00 | 62.00 | APTO |
Luis has the second-highest overall mark in this table, but fails because Grupo 2 is below 30. David’s low reading result is offset by writing, and his low speaking result is offset by listening. The examples show why both group sums must be calculated before looking at the overall total.
Productive Ratings Are Different
Writing and speaking are assessed with 0–3 rating scales. Analytic criteria describe aspects of the performance; holistic ratings judge the overall communicative result. In both productive tests, the published weighting is 40% holistic and 60% analytic. Do not confuse these percentages with a 40/60 weighting between the two writing tasks.
The writing tasks have equal weighting in the analytic component. Oral analytic ratings are made for Tasks 1–2 together and Tasks 3–4 together, with equal weight for the two pairs. The detailed rubric lessons explain how to use those scales for feedback. A self-assigned Band 2 is a learning diagnosis, not an official guaranteed mark.
Use Results to Plan the Next Attempt
After a model paper, record raw reading and listening counts, convert them, and obtain feedback on productive responses. If reading is strong but writing is weak, write a complete response to a new prompt and revise the specific problems. If listening is weak, use official audio without its transcript first, then inspect the missed evidence afterward. Reading a listening transcript alone does not measure listening skill.
Set practice targets above the minimum so that an unfamiliar topic does not immediately remove your margin. Such targets are personal planning choices, not additional Cervantes pass rules. Repeat a timed model only after correcting the underlying language; remembering an answer key can inflate apparent readiness.
Results, Review and Retaking
Cervantes currently describes results as arriving in approximately three months. Check its notification and your private candidate area; a date estimate is not a guaranteed release deadline. The current FAQ describes a downloadable grade certificate and, for successful candidates, a digital diploma. Do not plan around an asserted six-to-twelve-month wait for a paper parchment.
A passing group is not banked for a future partial retake. To obtain APTO, both groups must pass in the same session. If you need a review, follow the procedure and deadline announced with the results rather than relying on a generic description of legal appeal rights. Confirm that the displayed name and identity details are correct before using a certificate.
The certificate’s secure verification code can be checked through the official verification service. Verification establishes document authenticity; it does not automatically remove another institution’s document or admission requirements.
A candidate receives 24 reading items correct, 20 writing points, 12 listening items correct and 18 speaking points. What is the result?
APTO because the total is above 60.
NO APTO: Grupo 2 totals 28, below 30.
APTO because Grupo 1 points transfer to Grupo 2.
A partial pass allowing only listening to be retaken.

How can an academic institution or immigration authority officially verify the authenticity of a candidate's electronic DELE certificate?
By entering the unique Código Seguro de Verificación (CSV) printed on the certificate into the Instituto Cervantes verification portal
By contacting the candidate's test center supervisor via telephone to request paper exam archives
By submitting a notarized physical copy of the diploma to the Spanish Embassy by postal mail
