8.2 Tarea 2: Extended Personal Monologue
Key Takeaways
Listening Task 2 uses an extended monologue of about 400–450 words with six three-option questions.
Track changes of topic and verify each question’s evidence instead of memorizing a fixed biographical sequence.
Use the recorded reading period to identify the six information targets before listening.
Candidates must scrupulously differentiate factual biographical occurrences from subjective reflections, psychological motivations, and retrospective assessments.
The Paraphrase Mapping Technique bridges the gap between informal spoken phrasing (idioms, fillers, colloquial expressions) and formal written test options.
8.2 Tarea 2: Extended Personal Monologue
While Tarea 1 tests rapid processing of brief public announcements, Tarea 2 of Prueba 2: Comprensión auditiva evaluates your ability to follow continuous, extended oral discourse. Candidates listen to a longer monologue about personal experience, described in the specifications as 400–450 words, featuring an individual discussing their professional career, artistic initiative, scientific research, artisanal enterprise, or travel adventure.
This task mirrors the natural experience of listening to a cultural radio magazine, a documentary interview, or an in-depth podcast. Success requires sustained attention, chronological mapping, and the skill to separate objective facts from personal emotions and opinions.
Official Task Architecture & Auditory Cadence
Understanding the structural layout of Tarea 2 enables candidates to manage cognitive load over an extended listening window:
- Stimulus Format: One extended monologue describing the speaker’s personal experiences. Interviews can provide extra language practice, but do not redefine the published task format.
- Audio Length: Approximately 400–450 words; speaking speed determines the running time.
- Question Set: 6 multiple-choice questions (items 7–12 in Prueba 2), each with 3 options (A, B, C).
- Repetitions: The entire recording is played twice from start to finish, with a short pause between the two complete playbacks.
- Preparation Window: Candidates receive the recorded reading period of silent reading time before the audio begins to inspect questions 7 through 12.
- Scoring Value: 6 points out of 30 in Prueba 2 (20% of your listening score).
| Structural Dimension | Exam Specification | Strategic Function |
|---|---|---|
| Continuous Flow | 3–4 minutes uninterrupted | Requires active pacing without getting distracted or fatigued |
| Two Full Passes | Played twice completely | Pass 1: outline and tentative choices; Pass 2: verification and gap-filling |
| Preparation Time | the recorded reading period | Read all 6 question stems to construct the narrative roadmap |
| Linguistic Register | Semi-formal / Conversational standard | Clear articulation, but contains natural pauses, discourse fillers, and anecdotes |
Note
In Tarea 2, the audio is not paused after each question. The recording runs continuously from beginning to end during both playbacks. Candidates must follow the speaker in real time.
Track the Actual Topics
Preview all six questions to identify what each asks: a motive, an event, a difficulty or a reaction. As the speaker develops the account, follow topic changes and look for the relevant evidence. Do not assume that the first item always concerns childhood or that a future plan must answer the last item.
Question order can help orient your attention, but no fixed timestamp-to-item grid applies to every monologue. Mark an uncertain answer provisionally and move on when the next topic begins. Use the second hearing to check the specific missing link, such as who offered help or why the speaker changed a plan.
Distinguishing Factual Events from Subjective Reflections
Many candidates lose points on Tarea 2 by confusing what actually happened (los hechos consumados) with how the speaker felt or what they hoped would happen (las emociones, dudas y valoraciones subjetivas).
Interviewees frequently narrate an external sequence of events while weaving in psychological commentary. Questions deliberately target one of these two layers:
Layer 1: Objective Biographical Milestones (Hechos objetivos)
- «Abandonó sus estudios universitarios para viajar al extranjero.»
- «Consiguió la financiación gracias a una beca comunitaria.»
- «El taller se inauguró hace cinco años en un pueblo costero.»
Layer 2: Subjective Perceptions & Emotional States (Estados anímicos y valoraciones)
- «Al principio sentía miedo al fracaso, pero luego cobró confianza.»
- «Lo que más le satisface no es el reconocimiento económico, sino la autonomía.»
- «Se sentía abrumado por las exigencias de su antiguo empleo en la ciudad.»
| Prompt Framing | Target Layer | Auditory Linguistic Clues |
|---|---|---|
Warning
If a question asks «¿Qué sintió el protagonista al mudarse?», an option stating «Compró una casa antigua en el campo» is an objective fact from the audio, but it does NOT answer how he felt. Avoid picking facts when asked for feelings, and vice versa.
Paraphrase Mapping: Spoken Vernacular to Formal Written Options
In natural Spanish interviews, speakers use spontaneous spoken syntax, idioms, verbal periphrases, and discourse markers. In contrast, the written options in your test booklet are composed in syntactically concise, formal standard Spanish.
Mastering Tarea 2 requires real-time Paraphrase Mapping (correspondencia léxica y conceptual):
| Spoken Oral Utterance (Audio) | Linguistic Characteristic | Written Option Paraphrase (Exam Booklet) |
|---|---|---|
Correct options may paraphrase a colloquial expression, or may retain some of its words. Wording alone does not establish correctness. They test whether you understand the abstract conceptual meaning behind the conversational expression.
Panic Management & The Mid-Audio Recovery Protocol
The greatest danger in Tarea 2 is the Cognitive Freeze: a candidate encounters an unfamiliar word or realizes they missed the answer to Question 8, pauses in frustration trying to remember what was said, and in doing so, misses Questions 9 and 10 as well.
To prevent this cascading failure, follow the Mid-Audio Recovery Protocol:
- Use Topic Markers as Signposts: Listen for transitions such as al principio, el problema fue and ahora. In supplementary interview practice, a journalist’s question can also mark a topic change. The official Task 2 specification is a monologue.
- The 10-Second Rule: If the audio has progressed past the theme of a question and you are uncertain of the answer, place a light question mark next to the item and shift your focus to the next question immediately.
- Allocate Functions to Each Listening Pass:
- Pass 1 (Anchor Pass): Track the flow of all six questions. Answer the 3–4 items where the evidence is clear. For ambiguous items, note the rough timestamp or key phrase.
- Pass 2 (Precision Pass): Relax on the items you have already confirmed. Channel 100% of your auditory attention into the 1–2 unresolved questions when the speaker reaches those points in the narrative.
Worked Interview Case Study
Original Supplementary Interview Exercise: Mateo
(Incorrect: This was the reaction of his office colleagues («mis compañeros de oficina pensaban que era una locura pasajera fruto del estrés»), not his parents).
- Correct Choice: Le brindaron su apoyo incondicional a pesar de su preocupación por el aspecto económico. (Correct: Matches Mateo's words that his parents «temían que no lograra salir adelante económicamente... optaron por apoyarme desde el primer minuto y me ayudaron»).
- Distractor 2: Se negaron a ayudarle económicamente debido a su renuncia a los estudios universitarios. (Incorrect: The text states they did help him find property and supported him, and he had already finished his university degree years before).
Tip
Notice how Distractor 1 quotes words from the text («locura pasajera fruto del estrés»), but attributes them to the wrong group of people (family instead of colleagues). Always verify who holds the opinion.
Summary of Strategic Execution Rules for Extended Listening
- Rule 1: Build the Narrative Blueprint in the Pre-Listening Prep: Read through the 6 stems sequentially. The stems outline a miniature biography of the speaker before you hear a single word.
- Rule 2: Keep Your Eyes Moving: When you hear the evidence for Question 8, glance down at the prompt for Question 9 so you are primed for the next transition.
- Rule 3: Trust Concept Over Vocabulary Match: Choose the option that synthesizes the speaker's true intent, even if the phrasing looks different from the spoken words.
- Rule 4: Never Leave a Blank: DELE B1 does not penalize incorrect guesses. If an item remains unresolved, choose the option best supported by the evidence you caught, not a guess about the speaker’s personality.
