1.3 Open-Book Strategy, Reference Materials, and a 16-Week Study Plan

Open book is a rule set, not a safety net

ASQ states plainly that all ASQ exams are open book, and candidates must bring their own references. The allowance is real, but it is bounded by rules that test center administrators enforce by inspecting every item before you enter the room. Losing a reference at check-in on exam morning is an avoidable disaster.

What is permitted

• Permanently bound material. Bound means stitched or glued, or fastened securely in a cover by fasteners that penetrate all pages: ring binders, spiral binders, plastic snap binders, brads, or screw posts.
• Handwritten notes, provided they are bound to the same standard.
• Post-it notes as book tabs only, and they must be attached before you enter the test center.
• A calculator meeting the rules below, plus a backup calculator if you want one.

What is prohibited

• Hand-stapled documents that are not securely fastened in their covers.
• Electronic copies of handbooks or references of any kind.
• Blank writing tablets, tablets containing blank pages, unbound tablets, and unbound notes.
• Slide charts and wheel charts -- hand-held cardboard or plastic calculating devices with rotating or sliding pieces.
• Any collection of questions and answers, or weekly refresher-course quizzes. A reference that contains such material is not allowed unless the questions are removed or obscured. This rule routinely disqualifies otherwise legitimate exam-prep books, so check yours weeks in advance.

Physical limits

Prometric desks are approximately 48 inches long by 24 inches wide. Three thick volumes plus scratch paper and a calculator will fill that space. Most successful candidates carry one primary handbook plus one thin, heavily tabbed personal formula binder rather than a library.

Calculators

All computer-based exams include a basic on-screen scientific calculator, and the test center can supply a basic calculator on request. If you bring your own, it must be silent, hand-held, and battery-operated, without an alphabetic keyboard, and all programmable memory must be cleared before you enter the room. The Texas Instruments TI-89 and similar models are absolutely not allowed because they have alphabetic keyboards. ASQ states the exam is written so that a simple calculator is sufficient for every calculation -- if a problem seems to demand a statistics package, you have misread it.

Scratch paper

At a test center, Prometric provides a pencil and scratch paper. For remotely proctored exams, since 1 July 2022 candidates are prohibited from using blank scratch paper or physical writing objects and must use the Scratchpad function inside the exam application instead. If you plan to test remotely, practise your capability and hypothesis-test calculations in a plain on-screen text box before exam day; laying out an ANOVA table without paper is a learned skill.

Building a reference set that earns marks

Open book helps only if retrieval is faster than recall failure. Budget roughly 60 seconds of lookup before you move on and flag.

1. Index by BoK number, not by book chapter. Tab your primary handbook with the nine section numerals and the lettered subsections, so "VI.B.6 ANOVA" maps to a physical tab.
2. Build a one-page formula sheet per DMAIC phase and bind it at the front. Capability indices, MSA acceptance criteria, control chart constants, the four common test statistics, sample-size formulas, and yield metrics belong here.
3. Pre-print the constants tables you cannot derive: control chart factors ($A_2$, $D_3$, $D_4$, $d_2$, $B_3$, $B_4$, $c_4$), standard normal $z$, $t$, $F$, and chi-square critical values.
4. Do not tab what you already know. Tabs are a scarce resource; spend them on the material you miss in practice.

A 16-week study plan weighted to the blueprint

The plan below allocates study hours in proportion to ASQ's published question counts, then reserves the final three weeks for timed practice. Total is roughly 180 hours, consistent with the 140 to 220 hours most candidates report.

Two habits separate candidates who pass from candidates who nearly pass. First, do the arithmetic by hand even though the exam is open book -- an examinee who has computed twenty gage R&R studies recognises a %Study Variation trap instantly, while one who has only read about it burns four minutes. Second, take at least one full 4-hour-18-minute mock in one sitting. Statistical accuracy degrades sharply in hour four, and the only way to discover your personal failure mode is to experience it before exam day.
