Take the free Colorado Secretary of State eLearning notary training course (seven modules; the SOS estimates about 4 hours) covering Colorado notary law.
Pass the Online Exam
Take the free open-book online exam (the SOS estimates about 30 minutes to 1 hour). You must score at least 80%, and you must apply within 90 days of completing training and the exam.
Submit Online Application
Apply online via Colorado SOS eFiling system. Pay $10 application fee by credit card.
Purchase Notary Supplies
Get your official rectangular notary stamp and a notary journal (both required). No bond is required in Colorado.
Can You Take the Colorado Notary Exam?
Check if you meet the basic eligibility requirements
- •Must be U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident (or lawfully present)
- •Must be Colorado resident OR have regular place of employment in Colorado
- •Must read and write English sufficiently to perform notarial acts
- •No felony conviction ever
- •No misdemeanor involving dishonesty in past 5 years
- •Never had Colorado notary commission revoked
- •No bond or insurance required (unlike most states)
- •Training and exam must be completed no more than 90 days before you apply (8 CCR 1505-11, Rule 2.1.3)
