The paper P&P-ASVAB has 225 questions across 9 subtests.

How long does the CAT-ASVAB take?

Approximately 1.5-2 hours of testing time. Each subtest is separately timed and adapts to your performance, so faster, accurate responses can shorten total time. The paper P&P-ASVAB also clocks at about 149 minutes for 225 questions.

What AFQT score do I need to enlist?

AFQT minimums vary by branch: Army 31, Marines 31, Navy 31, Air Force 36, Space Force 36, Coast Guard 40. The AFQT is computed from WK + PC + AR + MK and reported as a 1-99 percentile against a reference population.

Can I use a calculator on the CAT-ASVAB?

No. Calculators are not allowed on any ASVAB version. You receive scratch paper for calculations. Mental math practice is critical for Arithmetic Reasoning and Mathematics Knowledge subtests.

Can I skip or go back on the CAT-ASVAB?

No. Because CAT-ASVAB adapts after each response, you cannot skip a question or return to previous items in a subtest. Submit each answer deliberately and pace yourself to avoid late-section guessing penalties.

How does adaptive scoring work?

After each question, the CAT-ASVAB raises or lowers the next item's difficulty to converge on your true ability level. Your final score reflects both how many you answered correctly and the difficulty of those items, so harder correct answers raise your score more than easier ones.

How long are CAT-ASVAB scores valid?

ASVAB scores remain valid for 2 years for military enlistment. If your scores expire before enlisting, you must retake the test. The most recent score is the one of record under DoD retest policy.

Can I retake the CAT-ASVAB?

Yes. You must wait 1 month after your first attempt, 1 more month after the second attempt, and 6 months for each subsequent retake. Your most recent score replaces previous results.

What is the difference between CAT-ASVAB and PiCAT?

The PiCAT is an unproctored, internet-delivered CAT you take from home. If you score well, MEPS administers a short verification test instead of the full ASVAB. The CAT-ASVAB is the proctored, full-length adaptive version delivered at MEPS.

Where do I take the CAT-ASVAB?

The CAT-ASVAB is administered at Military Entrance Processing Stations (MEPS) on DoD-managed test computers. Applicants who cannot reach a MEPS facility may take the paper P&P-ASVAB at a Mobile Examining Test (MET) site instead.

Why does CAT-ASVAB split Auto and Shop?

How much does the CAT-ASVAB cost?

Free. There is no fee to take the CAT-ASVAB at MEPS. The DoD funds all official ASVAB testing for prospective enlistees.

How long should I study for the CAT-ASVAB?

Most candidates need 40-80 hours of study spread over 4-8 weeks. Prioritize AFQT subtests (WK, PC, AR, MK) first, then add science and technical sections to improve line scores for desired MOS options.

Is the CAT-ASVAB used by all branches?

What happens if I run out of time on a subtest?

Unanswered items at the end of an adaptive subtest are penalized more heavily than incorrect answers at the same point. If time is short, make a deliberate best-guess on each remaining item rather than leaving them blank.

Students typically take the ASVAB through the Career Exploration Program at school, which may use either the CAT or paper format. Those scores are valid for enlistment within 2 years if they are competitive for the desired branch.
