End-Paper Techniques
End papers protect the ends and stop fishhooks (Section 9.2). The standard names three ways to use them.

Whichever you use, the paper must extend past the ends of the hair and lie flat with no crease. A paper that stops short of the ends leaves them exposed to bend back on themselves, which is exactly the fishhook the paper is meant to prevent.

Perm Safety Practice
The standard lists these as required safety practices for the wrap, and each has a testable reason.
- Apply protective cream around the hairline, over the ears and along the nape before the solution goes on. It is a barrier — waving lotion on skin causes irritation and chemical burns.
- Secure a rope of cotton around the entire hairline over the protective cream, after the rods are wrapped and before the lotion is applied. It catches the runs.
- Change the cotton the moment it is saturated. This is the criterion candidates forget. Saturated cotton stops absorbing and becomes a wet compress holding thioglycolate against the skin — worse than no cotton at all. Replace it, do not just blot it.
- Use a chemical (waterproof) cape, not a cutting cape, plus a towel underneath (Section 3.2).
- Wear gloves throughout and use eye protection when pouring or applying, and keep the client's head tipped so nothing runs toward the eyes.
- Ask about scalp sensation continuously. Burning, stinging or itching means stop and rinse — it does not mean "it is working."
- Never wrap over a scratched, abraded or irritated scalp, and advise clients not to shampoo vigorously in the 24 hours before a perm appointment.
Aftercare closes the loop: no shampooing for 24-48 hours per the manufacturer, because the disulfide bonds re-formed by the neutralizer continue to stabilize, and no other chemical service until the manufacturer's interval has passed.
