The Law of Colour
RSOS sub-task F-13.03 carries an explicit knowledge outcome: explain the law of colour. It is a single sentence with a lot of consequences.
The law of colour: equal parts of two complementary colours (the pairs opposite each other on the colour wheel) mixed together neutralize each other and produce a brown or grey.
That is why every natural-looking hair colour is a balance of all three primaries, why a level-8 violet toner cancels yellow (Section 11.1), and why over-toning turns hair muddy — you have neutralized past the balance point and are now depositing the complementary colour on its own. Three practical corollaries:
- Neutralizing is subtraction. Adding blue to orange does not "cover" the orange; it cancels it toward neutral. If you add more than you need, the excess reads as blue.
- Warm plus cool equals dull. A client asking for a "cool copper" is asking for two things that cancel each other. Pick which one wins and say so.
- Intensity matters as much as hue. A saturated undertone on coarse hair needs more neutralizer; a porous, fine strand soaks up cool pigment and needs less, or a touch of gold to balance it (Section 11.4).

Foiling: weaving versus slicing
Section 12.1 introduced these. To restate the decision rule the exam uses: weaving picks alternating fine strands out of a section with the comb tail and produces a blended, natural highlight; slicing takes the whole clean slice and produces a bold, visible streak. A brief that says "natural, sun-kissed, no obvious stripes" is a weave; "bold, high contrast, visible pieces" is a slice.
Blocking versus foiling
Blocking is the technique candidates most often cannot describe. A block is a solid panel — the whole slice takes the new colour, and it is placed where you want a shape rather than a texture. Because there is no weaving, there is no blend, so the edges of a block are visible by design. A face-framing money piece, a solid under-panel of vivid colour, and a two-tone colour-blocked bob are all blocking. If the brief calls for a shape, block it; if it calls for dimension, weave it.
Freehand limits
Freehand paints in the open air, so it gets less lift than the same lightener in a foil, which traps heat. It also cannot reach the scalp cleanly, which is exactly why the grow-out is soft. If a client wants both a very pale blonde and a soft grow-out, the honest answer is a combination — freehand through the mid-lengths with foils where more lift is needed — and more than one appointment.
Tools: the Non-Metallic Rule
The RSOS tool list for this sub-task is specific: resources (swatch books, colour charts), tail comb, non-metallic clips, paddle boards, foils, cotton, non-metallic bowls, application brush, application bottle. Two things in it are testable.
Non-metallic clips and bowls. Metal reacts with hydrogen peroxide. A metal clip or bowl in contact with mixed colour or lightener accelerates and distorts development at the point of contact, produces uneven heat, and can leave a discoloured band exactly where the clip sat. Use plastic. (Aluminium foil is the deliberate exception: it is used as a heat-retaining barrier around the product, not as a mixing or holding vessel, and the product is enclosed by it rather than reacting through it.) The same rule appeared in Section 10.1 for relaxers, for the same reason.
Application brush versus bottle. A brush gives control and saturation and is standard for creams, foils and blocking. A bottle gives speed and even coverage on a global regrowth application and is standard for thinner liquid formulas and for lightener on virgin hair. A paddle board supports a section from underneath for freehand painting, so you can press the lightener firmly into the surface without it bleeding onto the sections below.
Swatch books and colour charts are how you set expectations at consultation and how you record the formula (Section 12.4). Match under natural light — salon lighting shifts perceived tone.
Monitoring and Removing in Sequence
Two performance criteria close the sub-task and both are easy marks.
Monitor the colouring process and the client (F-13.03.06P). Check development at intervals against a test strand rather than the clock alone (Section 12.2), and check the client — ask about scalp sensation, watch for redness at the hairline, and confirm they are comfortable in the chair. Burning is never normal; stop and rinse (Section 10.3).
Remove the product in sequence (F-13.03.07P). The order matters:
- Foils and blocks come out in the order they were placed — the first section applied has been processing longest.
- On a virgin global application, the scalp area was applied last (Section 12.1) and comes off with the rest once it has caught up.
- On any application, sections that are finer, more porous, or previously lightened develop faster and are rinsed first.
- Emulsify at the bowl — add a little warm water and massage the colour to a lather before rinsing. This lifts stain off the hairline and evens the deposit.
- Rinse until the water runs clear, then finish with an acidic post-colour conditioner or sealer to close the cuticle and bring the hair back toward pH 4.5-5.5 (Section 11.2).
Rinsing everything at once, regardless of when it went on, is how an evenly applied set of foils comes out unevenly developed.
