The Four Variables of Every Cut

Every haircut is the product of four interlocking choices: elevation (how high the hair is lifted from the head form), projection (the direction it is held), the design line or guide that sets the length, and the tension applied to each section. Master these four variables and you can reproduce or modify any shape on any client.

Elevation Angle

Elevation is the angle at which a section of hair is lifted away from the head form (the natural curve of the skull). It is measured from the head surface, not from the floor. Elevation is the single biggest predictor of where weight settles in a finished cut.

A common exam trap is confusing elevation with projection. Elevation is the vertical lift off the head form; projection is the horizontal direction the section is pulled once it is elevated.

Projection (Over-Direction)

Projection is the angle and direction the hair is held away from its natural fall after elevation is set. Pulling a section forward (toward the face) makes the hair on the opposite side of the part longer once released — this is over-direction. Pulling a nape section back past natural fall keeps the back longer.

Over-direction is how stylists build length and weight exactly where they want it:

  • Forward over-direction → longer back, shorter front (classic bob back).
  • Straight out at natural fall → length follows the head curve.
  • Back over-direction → longer front, shorter back (face-framing).

Design Lines (Guide Lines)

A design line is the first section cut to a chosen length; every subsequent section is guided by it. There are two families:

Stationary Guide

A stationary guide is cut once and held fixed. Each new section is brought back to it and cut to the same length. Because the guide never moves, the cut builds length away from the guide — the classic way to create a one-length or solid shape.

Travelling (Moving) Guide

A travelling guide is re-cut to each new section, so the guide moves with the cut. A small length change compounds across the head, which is why travelling guides are used for graduation and layering where length shifts are intentional. The risk is drift: a 2 mm error per section becomes 2 cm by the time you cross the head.

Tension

Tension is the even pull applied to a section so all hairs lie flat and are cut at the same length. Uneven tension produces uneven lines. Two rules:

  1. Wet hair stretches. Curly and coily hair can elongate up to 50% when wet and spring back on drying. Cut wet curly hair conservatively (longer than you want the dry result) or cut dry to see true length.
  2. Tension must be consistent across the section and from section to section. A section held tighter than the previous one will be cut shorter, even at the same elevation.

For coarse straight hair, use a cutting comb with wider teeth to avoid snagging; for fine hair, a fine-tooth comb keeps the section tidy. Always comb the section twice — once to align, once to confirm — before cutting.

Body and Client Head Position

Accuracy depends on a still, correctly positioned client and an ergonomically sound stylist.

  • Client sits upright, shoulders level, back against the chair.
  • Head upright, not tilted. Tilting the chin down drops the nape hair and changes its elevation; tilting sideways shifts the parietal ridge. A 10° head tilt can move a cut line by 1 cm in the nape.
  • Stylist body position mirrors the section being cut: stand in front for fringe, side for sides, behind for the back. Cutting across your body distorts line angle.
  • Sectioning clips keep uncut hair out of the way so it does not change the guide length.

Putting It Together

A graduated bob at 45° elevation, forward over-direction, and a stationary nape guide will stack weight at the back and lengthen toward the front.
