Two Modes of Proof

A capstone exists so the RTO can see both what you know and what you can do before a licensing authority relies on that judgement. It is deliberately independent of day-to-day apprenticeship marking.

Written component

MEM10025's range of conditions describes the written component as using objective assessment methods, "including a sensible proportion of multiple choice questions ('essay style' to be avoided) and some written answers to the objective questions", aimed at demonstrating understanding of the 'critical' aspects specified in the EPC list. Neither capstone unit publishes a fixed question count, so RTOs structure papers differently while still covering the critical EPCs.

Expect items that force you to:

  • Locate and apply AS/NZS 3000 clauses (isolation, damp situations, protection, earthing, switchboards, verification).
  • Select cables or check voltage drop using AS/NZS 3008.1.1 tables and the mV/A·m method.
  • Apply maximum demand diversity (Appendix C / Table C1 reasoning).

Practical component

Under MEM10025 the practical is the majority of the day and requires demonstrated fundamental knowledge and comprehension of electrical concepts and safety principles "using (where possible) problems that test a combination of practical and theoretical knowledge and skills". Tasks probe installation practice, identifying and rectifying non-compliance defects and retesting, safe isolation, testing to the Section 8 sequence, and completing all mandatory documentation.

UEEEL0039's performance evidence is explicit about what you will do: apply WHS requirements; safely measure d.c. circuit parameters; safely isolate (including preparing a SWMS or JSA); determine maximum demand and select mains, submains and final subcircuit cables; select equipment and switchgear; determine maximum fault-loop impedance and conductor sizes; install and terminate consumers mains and subcircuit cabling; complete visual inspection; conduct and report mandatory testing; identify causes of non-compliance from test results; and identify and rectify faults.

Budget your stamina. After a cognitively heavy written paper you still need careful, methodical practical work.

Reference-Material Rules

MEM10025's range of conditions permits standards and published reference books in the written component but states that computers and personal notes are to be excluded. In practice most RTOs extend that to programmable calculators and phones. UEEEL0039 does not publish a reference rule at all.

Typically allowed (confirm with your RTO first):

  • AS/NZS 3000 Wiring Rules — the edition your RTO specifies.
  • AS/NZS 3008.1.1 for cable selection.
  • Other published reference texts the RTO explicitly lists.

Assume excluded unless told otherwise in writing:

Both units impose assessor independence and licensing requirements:
