Before Test Day

Confirm the book rules. Your exam may be administered at a division office, a job center, an approved proctor, or a union hall, and the person proctoring will inspect your code book. Contact the Anchorage office and ask specifically about removable tabs, highlighting, handwritten margin notes, and loose inserted sheets. Loose paper is the item most commonly refused. Do not discover this at 8:00 a.m. on the first Wednesday of the month.

Buy the right edition. The 2020 NEC. Not the 2017 and not the 2023. Table numbering changed between 2017 and 2020 — what was Table 310.15(B)(16) is now Table 310.16, and the ambient correction and adjustment tables are now 310.15(B)(1) and 310.15(C)(1). A 2017 book will send you to the wrong page under time pressure.

Tab it yourself. Section 2.2 of this guide gives the three-tier system: nine chapter tabs on the top edge, about twenty high-traffic article tabs on the side, and about fifteen table tabs on the bottom in a distinct colour. Forty to sixty tabs total. Writing them yourself is part of the learning; a preprinted set will not match how you think.

Practise the lookups, not just the answers. Time yourself finding Table 220.55, Table 250.122, Table 430.52, Chapter 9 Table 4, and Annex C Table C.1 from a closed book. Under twenty seconds each is the target.

Triage: The First Pass

With four hours and no published item count, budget by proportion rather than by minutes per question. A workable approach:

Pass 1 — the sweep (about 40 percent of your time). Go through every question in order. Answer immediately anything you know cold or can look up in under thirty seconds. Mark and skip anything that requires a multi-step calculation or a lookup you are unsure of. Do not let a single hard question eat ten minutes on the first pass.

Pass 2 — the calculations (about 40 percent). Return to the marked calculation questions. These are worth the same as the easy ones, but they take five times as long, so they belong after you have banked every quick mark.

Pass 3 — the residue and review (about 20 percent). Attack anything still unanswered. Then re-read the questions you flagged as uncertain. Answer every question — an unanswered question scores zero, while a reasoned elimination gives you a real chance.

Every calculation question in this guide follows one of a small number of shapes. Run the same steps every time:

The Highest-Value Traps to Rehearse

  1. The 90 degrees C column is a starting point, never an allowable ampacity where terminations are rated lower. 110.14(C).
  2. 240.4(D) is not an ampacity. 12 AWG copper is 20 A at 60 degrees C, 25 A at 75 degrees C and 30 A at 90 degrees C, but 240.4(D)(5) caps the overcurrent device at 20 A whichever column the terminations permit.
  3. Article 430 uses the table FLC for everything except overload, which uses nameplate.
  4. 430.62 rounds down while 240.4(B) rounds up.
  5. The equipment grounding conductor counts for conduit fill but never for ampacity adjustment.
  6. The neutral counts as a current-carrying conductor on a four-wire wye with major nonlinear load, and on two-phases-plus-neutral of a wye — not on a three-wire single-phase circuit.
  7. 250.66(A), (B), and (C) cap the grounding electrode conductor at 6 AWG for rods, 4 AWG for concrete-encased, and the ring conductor size for a ground ring, no matter how large the service.
  8. Table 110.26(A)(1) is indexed on voltage to ground, and concrete, brick, or tile walls make the space Condition 2.
  9. 110.26(C)(2) is 1200 A and over 6 ft wide for two entrances; 110.26(C)(3) is 800 A within 25 ft for panic hardware. Different thresholds.
  10. Dedicated equipment space (110.26(E)) is a column above the gear; working space (110.26(A)) is in front of it.
  11. The 25-ohm rule applies to a single rod, pipe, or plate electrode only. There is no maximum resistance for the system.
  12. A water pipe electrode always needs a supplement, with no resistance exception.
  13. The service neutral has two minimums — the 220.61 calculated load and the 250.24(C) / Table 250.102(C)(1) floor. Take the larger.
  14. Chapter 8 stands alone under 90.3.

Alaska-Specific Facts Worth Having Cold

  • 8 AAC 70.025 adopts the 2020 NEC and the 2017 NESC. No state technical amendments.
  • 8,000 hours for journeyman; no more than 2,000 residential; no more than 1,000 classroom substitution; no more than 1,000 lineman; maintenance electrician does not count.
  • Residential wireman: 4,000 hours, 500 hours classroom, limited to four residential units on a common foundation.
  • Trainee ratio: two trainees per journeyman or residential wireman.
  • Fees: $50 application + $200 journeyman certificate for two years. Provisional is $150 total, one year, non-renewable.
  • Renewal: 16 hours CE, at least 8 on NEC changes, within the preceding 24 months. Renew up to 90 days early.
  • Penalty: AS 18.62.080 — misdemeanor, fine not more than $500. AS 18.60.650 — up to $1,000 for non-compliant wiring left uncorrected after written notice.
  • Alaska issues no master electrician license. Electrical Administrator is a separate DCCED credential under AS 08.40 and does not authorize code work.
  • The journeyman scope begins at the secondary side of the transformer, within property lines (8 AAC 90.900(10)).

Two Weeks Out

  • Do a full timed dwelling service calculation by both the standard and optional methods until each takes under ten minutes.
  • Do five conduit fill problems with mixed conductor sizes, and five with same-size conductors using Annex C.
  • Do five motor problems end to end: conductors, overload, short-circuit protection, feeder, disconnect.
  • Re-read Article 90 and the Article 100 definitions in this guide's sections 2.1 and 2.3. They are free marks.
  • Re-read Chapter 1 of this guide. Alaska licensing facts are the questions nobody studies and everybody could answer.

On the Day

Bring the 2020 NEC, your government photo ID, a calculator you have used before, two pencils, and a highlighter if permitted. Arrive early. Read every question twice. Answer the easy ones first. Write the steps down. Check whether the question asked for a conductor or a device. And when an option offers something that sounds like a special Alaska rule, remember that Alaska adopted the NEC without amending it.
