Source Control for Current ACI Facts

Good preparation starts with current source control — studying the exact documents and editions ACI lists today, not whatever workbook a coworker happens to own. ACI's program page lists these governing editions:

These editions should drive the study plan unless ACI updates its official page again. ASTM standards are revised periodically, and a value or step can change between editions. Studying an old edition of, say, C231 risks learning a superseded procedure, which is exactly the kind of trap the per-method written floor punishes.

The CP-1, 41st Edition Workbook

ACI's current bookstore product for this credential is CP-1, 41st Edition, the Technician Workbook for Concrete Field Testing Technician—Grade I, published in 2025 (ISBN 978-1-64195-301-6). It is the primary study companion ACI publishes for the program.

What CP-1 contains:

• Program information explaining the certification and its requirements
• Study questions modeled on the written exam style
• Sample performance checklists for the demonstrated procedures
• A practice exam to rehearse the format

What CP-1 does not contain is just as important: the ASTM standards themselves are not included in the workbook. This is a frequent and expensive surprise. A candidate who buys only CP-1 and assumes it reproduces C143 or C231 in full will study from summaries and questions, not the controlling test methods. ACI's product page explicitly states the ASTM standards are not part of the workbook.

Building a Complete Study Set

Because CP-1 omits the standards, a complete study set has three legs:

Avoiding Outdated Editions

Used copies of older CP-1 editions (37th, 38th, 40th) circulate widely and are cheaper. They are useful for general familiarity, but they may cite superseded ASTM editions and older checklists. For exam-critical numbers, verify against the current editions ACI lists. Treating an old workbook as authoritative is one of the most common ways candidates memorize a value that is no longer correct.

How to Actually Use Each Source

The three legs of the study set are not interchangeable; each does a different job, and using them in the right order is more efficient than reading everything at once.

• Start with the ASTM standard for a given test to learn the authoritative steps, values, and validity rules in their exact wording.
• Use CP-1's study questions for that same standard to convert reading into recall and to surface gaps.
• Use CP-1's sample checklist to rehearse the physical procedure in the exact step order the examiner will grade.
• Take CP-1's practice exam once near the end to rehearse the 55-question, one-hour format and the dual passing rule.

This loop — read the standard, drill the questions, rehearse the checklist — repeated for each of the seven standards, covers both the written and performance sides from the same materials.

Free and Supplemental Resources

Many ACI chapters and DOTs publish review notes, equipment lists, and practice sessions tied to the same seven standards. These are useful for scheduling and hands-on time, but they are supplements, not substitutes for the official ASTM editions. When a handout and the current ASTM standard disagree on a number, the standard wins. Every value you memorize should trace back to a current ASTM edition or the current CP-1, not to an undated handout. Building that habit during study also builds the documentation discipline the credential is meant to certify.

A Reading Order That Saves Time

Candidates often waste effort by reading all seven standards front to back before doing anything else, then forgetting the first by the time they reach the last. A faster loop is to work one standard at a time to completion: read C172, drill its CP-1 questions, rehearse its checklist, then move to C1064, and so on. Each standard is finished — read, recalled, and rehearsed — before the next begins, which fights the forgetting that comes from front-loading all the reading.

When you reach the calculation-heavy standards (C138 for density, yield, and gravimetric air; C231 for the aggregate correction factor), spend extra time working the numbers by hand rather than just reading the formulas. The written exam asks you to compute, not merely recognize, so a formula you have only read is a formula you cannot use under the one-hour clock.

Keeping Sources Current Over Time

Finally, remember that source control is a moving target. ACI revises its program page and CP-1 periodically, and ASTM revises the underlying standards. Before any attempt — first certification or renewal — re-check the current ACI program page for the listed editions rather than assuming last year's set still applies. Verifying them is a five-minute habit that prevents studying a superseded value.
