1Choose the correct reading (furigana) for the underlined kanji: 「わたしは毎日(まいにち)__学校(がっこう)へ行きます。」 What is the reading of 学校?
A.がっこう
B.がくこう
C.がこう
D.かっこう
Explanation: 学校 (school) is read がっこう. The 学 (gaku) combines with 校 (kō) and the final く of gaku changes to a small っ (sokuon) before the k-sound, giving がっこう.
2Fill in the blank with the correct particle: 「わたしは ともだち__ えいがを 見ました。」 (I watched a movie WITH a friend.)
A.
B.
C.
D.
Explanation: The particle と marks the person you do an action together with: ともだちと means 'with a friend'. So ともだちと えいがを 見ました means 'I watched a movie with a friend'.
3Choose the word that best fits the blank: 「あついですから、まどを __ ください。」 (It is hot, so please ___ the window.)
A.しめて
B.けして
C.あけて
D.つけて
Explanation: あけて is the te-form of あける (to open). Because it is hot (あついですから), the logical request is to OPEN the window: まどを あけてください.
4Complete the sentence with the correct form: 「きのう、ともだちと レストラン__ ばんごはんを 食べました。」 (Yesterday I ate dinner AT a restaurant with a friend.)
A.
B.
C.
D.
Explanation: The particle で marks the place where an action happens. Eating dinner is an action that takes place AT the restaurant, so レストランで is correct.
5Choose the correct counter: 「きょうしつに がくせいが さんじゅう__ います。」 (There are thirty students in the classroom.)
A.にん
B.まい
C.ほん
D.さつ
Explanation: にん (人) is the counter for people. Thirty students = さんじゅうにん (三十人). Counting people regularly uses 人.
6Select the correct verb form: 「わたしは 日本語が すこし __。」 (I can speak a little Japanese.)
A.はなします
B.はなせます
C.はなしました
D.はなしません
Explanation: はなせます is the potential form of はなす (to speak), meaning 'can speak'. With すこし (a little) it expresses ability: 日本語が すこし はなせます = 'I can speak a little Japanese'. Note that が, not を, is used with the potential form.
7Choose the correct expression: When you receive a meal and are about to start eating, Japanese people commonly say:
A.ごちそうさま
B.ただいま
C.いただきます
D.おかえりなさい
Explanation: いただきます is said BEFORE eating, expressing gratitude for the food. It is the standard phrase used just as one begins a meal.
8Fill in the blank: 「この りんごは ひとつ 100円__。」 (This apple is 100 yen EACH/per one.) Choose the most natural reading of the price phrase.
A.ひゃくげん
B.せんえん
C.じゅうえん
D.ひゃくえん
Explanation: 100円 is read ひゃくえん (hyaku-en). 百 = ひゃく (hundred) and 円 = えん (yen), so 100円 = ひゃくえん.
9Choose the correct adjective form: 「この まちは とても __ です。」 (This town is very quiet.)
A.しずか
B.しずかい
C.しずく
D.しずかな
Explanation: しずか (quiet) is a na-adjective. Before です it appears in its plain stem form: しずかです. With とても it reads とても しずかです = 'very quiet'.
10Select the correct te-form sentence: 「あさ おきて、かおを あらって、それから ごはんを __。」 (In the morning I get up, wash my face, and then eat.)
A.食べて
B.食べます
C.食べたい
D.食べない
Explanation: When listing a sequence of actions with the te-form, the FINAL verb takes the polite ます-form to close the sentence. So the chain ends with 食べます: 'get up, wash my face, and then eat'.

About the THPT Japanese Exam

The Japanese paper of Vietnam's National High School Graduation Examination (Ky thi tot nghiep THPT) is an elective foreign-language subject taken under the 2018 General Education Program. From the 2025 reform (Quyet dinh 4068/QD-BGDDT; Thong tu 24/2024/TT-BGDDT) the exam was cut to four subjects - Mathematics and Literature compulsory plus two electives - and foreign languages, including Japanese, became elective rather than compulsory. The Japanese paper has 40 four-option multiple-choice questions to be answered in 50 minutes, each worth 0.25 points for a maximum of 10. Questions are grouped around several reading passages and assess vocabulary, kanji, grammar, particles, everyday communication and reading comprehension at roughly CEFR A2-B1 (JLPT N4-N3) level. In 2026 the exam is held on 12 June and graduation is decided by a 50/50 weighting of exam results and the three-year school transcript.

THPT Japanese Study Tips from Top Performers

1Master the core particles (wa, ga, wo, ni, de, to, he, kara, made) and practise choosing them inside full sentences, the most common grammar item type.
2Drill kanji readings for everyday words (school, train, hospital, library, weather) and watch for sound changes and look-alike words such as byouin vs biyouin.
3Learn the high-frequency verb forms: te-form, potential, volitional, obligation (nakereba narimasen), prohibition (te wa ikemasen) and the advice pattern (ta hou ga ii).
4Practise timed reading: the paper clusters around several passages, so build speed at scanning short texts, letters and notices for specific details.
5Study set phrases and basic keigo (itadakimasu, odaijini, o-machi kudasai, te kudasaimashita) so situational and politeness questions are quick points.
6Take full 50-minute mock papers using the official 2025 sample exam to learn the 40-question pacing - roughly 75 seconds per question.
7Review giving/receiving verbs (ageru, kureru, morau) and comparison patterns (yori, no hou ga, ichiban), which regularly produce tricky distractors.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the THPT Japanese exam and how many questions does it have?

The official paper has 40 four-option multiple-choice questions and lasts 50 minutes. Each correct answer earns 0.25 points, for a maximum total of 10 points.

Is Japanese compulsory in the high school graduation exam?

No. Under the 2025 reform (Quyet dinh 4068/QD-BGDDT and Thong tu 24/2024/TT-BGDDT), the exam was cut to four subjects - Mathematics and Literature compulsory plus two electives - and foreign languages, including Japanese, are now elective.

How is the graduation result calculated from 2025?

Graduation is decided by a 50/50 weighting: the converted exam score counts for 50% and the three-year upper-secondary school transcript (hoc ba) for 50%, plus any priority/encouragement points. There is no fixed pass mark for Japanese alone.

What level is the THPT Japanese exam?

It follows the 2018 General Education Program, roughly CEFR A2-B1. Independent analysts placed the 2025 paper near JLPT N4-N3 level, with the longest reading passage being the most difficult section.

Can a JLPT certificate exempt me from the Japanese exam?

Yes. Under the regulations, a JLPT N3 certificate (Japan Foundation) or J.TEST level D can be used to exempt the foreign-language subject for graduation recognition, although the certificate is no longer converted into a 10-point score.

When is the 2026 THPT Japanese exam held and is there a fee?

The Japanese paper is scheduled for 12 June 2026. The national graduation exam is state-funded, so there is no separate exam fee; candidates register through their school or provincial Department of Education and Training.
