3AE01 and 3AE02 are the USCG operational-level engineer license modules for Third Assistant Engineer Unlimited on steam, motor, and/or gas turbine vessels of unlimited propulsion power. 3AE01 covers Q531-Q534 (motor plants I/II, gas turbines, safety/environmental); 3AE02 covers Q535-Q538 (general subjects, electrical/control, steam plants I/II). Each module is 70 questions with a 70% pass mark and up to 3.5 hours. Typical original upper-level MMC fees are about $255 ($100 evaluation + $110 exam + $45 issuance) under 46 CFR 10.219. Second Assistant raise of grade from Third Assistant needs no further written exam when already examined operationally (46 CFR 11.903(c)(9)). These modules are not the 1AE01 Chief/First Assistant management battery.

About the Third Assistant Engineer 3AE Exam
The USCG Third Assistant Engineer Unlimited examination is the operational-level written battery for unlimited-horsepower engineer officers of the watch. The National Maritime Center currently administers it as exam codes 3AE01 (modules Q531-Q534) and 3AE02 (modules Q535-Q538). Each module has 70 multiple-choice questions and requires at least 70% to pass. Content spans motor and steam plants, gas turbines, general engineering subjects, electricity/electronics/control, and engineering safety with environmental protection. Under 46 CFR 11.903(c)(9), a mariner who already holds Third Assistant Engineer and has been examined at the operational level may raise grade to Second Assistant Engineer Unlimited on qualifying sea service without a further written examination. This bank is disjoint from the management-level 1AE01 (Q511-Q517) covered by uscg-chief-engineer-unlimited.
Assessment
Modular REC battery. 3AE01 = Q531-Q534; 3AE02 = Q535-Q538. Each module independently graded at 70%. REC rules: up to 3.5 hours per module, minimum two modules per day when multiple remain, modules of an examination completed on consecutive days within the same business week. Engine candidates receive 46 CFR Parts 1-199 and 33 CFR Parts 1-199 as room references.

Third Assistant Engineer 3AE Study Tips from Top Performers
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the USCG Third Assistant Engineer Unlimited exam?
It is the operational-level modular knowledge examination administered by the National Maritime Center for Third Assistant Engineer of steam, motor, and/or gas turbine-propelled vessels of unlimited propulsion power. Current exam codes are 3AE01 (Q531-Q534) and 3AE02 (Q535-Q538).
How is 3AE01 different from 3AE02?
3AE01 covers Motor Plants I (Q531), Motor Plants II (Q532), Gas Turbine Plants (Q533), and Engineering Safety & Environmental Protection (Q534). 3AE02 covers General Subjects (Q535), Electricity, Electronics & Control Engineering (Q536), Steam Plants I (Q537), and Steam Plants II (Q538). Both are Third Assistant Unlimited modules on the NMC engine-officer page.
Is this the same as Chief Engineer / First Assistant (1AE01)?
No. 1AE01 uses modules Q511-Q517 and is the management-level battery for First Assistant Engineer Unlimited (and raise of grade to Chief Engineer Unlimited under 46 CFR 11.510). Third Assistant uses Q531-Q538 under 3AE01/3AE02 — a disjoint module set.
Do I need another written exam to become Second Assistant Engineer Unlimited?
Under 46 CFR 11.903(c)(9), Second Assistant Engineer when upgrading from Third Assistant does not require further examination if the applicant has already been examined at the operational level. You still need qualifying sea service under 46 CFR 11.514.
How many questions and what is the pass mark?
Each module has 70 multiple-choice questions and requires a minimum of 70% to pass. A full steam-motor-gas turbine path is eight modules (560 questions).
How long do I get per module?
NMC administration guidance commonly allows up to 3.5 hours per module. When multiple modules remain, RECs typically require a minimum of two modules per day, completed on consecutive days within the same business week.
What are the fees?
For an original upper-level officer endorsement (unlimited propulsion power), 46 CFR 10.219 lists $100 evaluation, $110 examination, and $45 issuance (about $255 total). Fees are paid electronically (Pay.gov) through the NMC process.
What references are allowed in the exam room?
For engine examinations, the REC supplies 46 CFR Parts 1-199 and 33 CFR Parts 1-199. Engineering exam illustrations are provided with the module; no other reference books are permitted except for open-book renewal exercises.
Is this practice bank an official exam simulation?
No. It is a free English multiple-choice study aid covering the operational-level 3AE01/3AE02 topic areas. Official exams are administered by the Coast Guard at Regional Exam Centers using current NMC banks.
