Who needs the Auxiliary Sail endorsement?

It is an additional officer endorsement for sail or auxiliary sail service on appropriate Master/Mate (and related) deck credentials when required for the vessel and service authorized. Recreational sailing without passengers for hire does not require a USCG officer endorsement. OUPV authority for up to six passengers on uninspected vessels is separate; Auxiliary Sail is commonly associated with Master/Mate paths for inspected or other sail/auxiliary sail service as endorsed on the MMC.

Is Q460 the same as Assistance Towing?

No. Q460 is Auxiliary Sail. Q461 is Assistance Towing. Both are additional deck officer endorsements, but they test different knowledge domains.

What sea service is required?

You must document sail or auxiliary sail sea service under the 46 CFR Part 11 provisions for your grade and route (amounts differ—for example, certain less-than-100 GRT Master near-coastal sail endorsements require 12 months on sail/auxiliary sail under 46 CFR 11.428(b)).
