About the O-Level Additional Mathematics (4049) Exam
Additional Mathematics (Syllabus 4049) is a Singapore-Cambridge GCE Ordinary Level subject usually taken at the end of Secondary 4, alongside Mathematics (E-Math, 4052). It is more advanced than E-Math and assumes knowledge of the O-Level Mathematics syllabus. The content is organised into three strands: Algebra, Geometry and Trigonometry, and Calculus. Assessment is by two written papers, each lasting 2 hours 15 minutes and carrying 90 marks (50% each); Paper 1 has 12-14 questions and Paper 2 has 9-11 questions, all compulsory. The syllabus is designed to build the algebraic manipulation and reasoning skills needed for A-Level H2 Mathematics.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between O-Level A-Math (4049) and E-Math (4052)?
E-Math (4052) covers core numeracy, algebra, geometry and statistics, while A-Math (4049) adds more advanced algebra, trigonometric identities, and calculus (differentiation and integration). A-Math assumes E-Math knowledge and prepares students for A-Level H2 Mathematics.
How is O-Level Additional Mathematics 4049 assessed?
By two written papers, each 2 hours 15 minutes long and worth 90 marks (50% each). Paper 1 has 12-14 questions and Paper 2 has 9-11 questions; all questions are compulsory. An approved calculator may be used in both papers.
What grading scale is used for O-Level A-Math?
Singapore O-Levels use the A1 to F9 scale. A1 and A2 are distinctions, C5 and C6 are passes, and F9 is a fail. SEAB sets grade boundaries each year; there is no fixed published pass mark.
What are the three strands of the 4049 syllabus?
Algebra (quadratics, surds, polynomials, partial fractions, binomial theorem, exponentials and logarithms); Geometry and Trigonometry (trig functions and identities, coordinate geometry, plane-geometry proofs); and Calculus (differentiation and integration, including kinematics).
Can private candidates sit O-Level A-Math 4049?
Yes. Private candidates register through the SEAB Candidates Portal (the 2026 main window was in April). Fees are roughly S$100-S$105 for Singapore citizens, S$170 for PRs and S$220 for international candidates, inclusive of GST.
