1What is the value of the digit 7 in the number 47 318?
A.7
B.70
C.700
D.7000
Explanation: In 47 318 the digit 7 is in the thousands place, so its value is 7 x 1000 = 7000. Place value tells you what each digit is worth based on its position.
2Which number is one thousand more than 6 425?
A.6 525
B.7 425
C.6 435
D.16 425
Explanation: Adding one thousand changes the thousands digit: 6 425 + 1 000 = 7 425. Only the thousands place increases by 1.
3What is 3 040 + 2 960?
A.5 000
B.6 000
C.6 100
D.5 900
Explanation: 3 040 + 2 960 = 6 000. You can see the ones to hundreds (040 + 960) make 1 000, plus 3 000 + 2 000 = 5 000, giving 6 000.
4A baker made 1 250 buns in the morning and 980 buns in the afternoon. How many buns did he make in all?
A.2 130
B.2 230
C.2 330
D.2 220
Explanation: 1 250 + 980 = 2 230. Adding the two amounts gives the total number of buns.
5What is 6 003 - 2 587?
A.3 416
B.3 426
C.3 516
D.4 416
Explanation: 6 003 - 2 587 = 3 416. Renaming across the zeros is needed: borrowing carefully gives 3 416.
6What is 48 x 6?
A.248
B.288
C.284
D.298
Explanation: 48 x 6 = (40 x 6) + (8 x 6) = 240 + 48 = 288.
7What is 504 divided by 8?
A.62
B.63
C.64
D.53
Explanation: 504 div 8 = 63, because 8 x 63 = 504. You can check by multiplying back.
8Look at the pattern: 4, 9, 14, 19, ... What is the next number?
A.23
B.24
C.25
D.22
Explanation: Each number is 5 more than the one before, so 19 + 5 = 24.
9Which of these numbers is a multiple of both 3 and 4?
A.18
B.20
C.24
D.26
Explanation: A multiple of both 3 and 4 is a multiple of 12. 24 = 12 x 2, and it is in both the 3 and 4 times tables.
10What is 2 500 rounded to the nearest thousand?
A.2 000
B.3 000
C.2 500
D.2 600
Explanation: When rounding to the nearest thousand, 500 or more rounds up. So 2 500 rounds up to 3 000.

AEIS Primary Study Tips from Top Performers

1Learn Singapore maths vocabulary and the bar-model (model drawing) method, which is the standard way primary word problems are solved and explained in Singapore schools.
2Practise without a calculator from the start, because the AEIS-Primary Maths test does not allow calculators in either part.
3Target the syllabus for the level below the one you are applying for; for example, prepare Primary 4 content if you are applying to Primary 5.
4Drill multi-step word problems on fractions, ratio, measurement and money, since these appear often and reward neat, clearly written working.
5Time Part 1 at roughly one minute per multiple-choice question so you can move on from hard items and return to them later.
6For Part 2, always write the working steps and units, because open-ended marks are awarded for the method, not only the final answer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does AEIS-Primary test English?

No. From 2022, SEAB no longer offers an AEIS-Primary English paper. International students must instead meet a required Cambridge English Qualification (CEQ) score before registering, and only Mathematics is sat through AEIS-Primary.

How is the AEIS-Primary Mathematics test structured?

It has two parts. Part 1 is 30 multiple-choice questions in 35 minutes. Part 2 is 8 short-answer and 6 open-ended questions in 50 minutes, where students must clearly show their working. Calculators are not allowed.

Which primary levels can I apply for through AEIS?

AEIS-Primary admits international students to Primary 2 to Primary 5. It does not admit to Primary 1 or Primary 6. The Mathematics test is set at two levels: Primary 2/3 and Primary 4/5.

What maths topics does AEIS-Primary cover?

It follows the Singapore primary maths syllabus for the level below the one applied for: whole numbers and operations, fractions, decimals, percentage, ratio, measurement, money, time, geometry and data handling.

Is there a pass mark for AEIS-Primary?

No. There is no fixed pass mark. Placement depends on test performance, the applicant's age and level, and the availability of school vacancies, so meeting a benchmark does not guarantee a place.

Are these official SEAB or MOE practice questions?

No. These are original OpenExamPrep questions modelled on the Singapore primary mathematics syllabus that AEIS-Primary tests. SEAB and MOE publish their own information and any official sample materials separately.
