1Which of the following compounds possesses a permanent non-zero molecular dipole moment (is polar)?
A.Carbon dioxide (CO2)
B.Ammonia (NH3)
C.Boron trifluoride (BF3)
D.Carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)
Explanation: Ammonia (NH3) has a trigonal pyramidal molecular geometry resulting from three N-H bonds and one nitrogen lone pair. Because the dipole moments of the polar N-H bonds do not cancel out in this asymmetrical geometry, ammonia has a permanent molecular dipole moment.
2What is the systematic IUPAC name for the inorganic compound Fe2(SO4)3?
A.Iron(II) sulfate
B.Iron(II) sulfite
C.Iron(III) sulfate
D.Tri-iron disulfate
Explanation: In Fe2(SO4)3, the polyatomic sulfate anion has a -2 charge (SO4^2-). Three sulfate ions contribute a total charge of -6, requiring the two iron cations to balance with a +6 charge, meaning each iron cation has an oxidation state of +3 (iron(III)). Hence the systematic name is iron(III) sulfate.
3Which chlorine oxoacid contains chlorine in the +5 oxidation state?
A.Hypochlorous acid (HClO)
B.Chloric acid (HClO3)
C.Chlorous acid (HClO2)
D.Perchloric acid (HClO4)
Explanation: In HClO3, hydrogen is +1 and each oxygen is -2 (-6 total). To maintain electrical neutrality, the oxidation state of chlorine must be +5 (+1 + 5 - 6 = 0). Systematic nomenclature assigns the suffix '-ic' to the +5 chlorine oxoacid (chloric acid).
4What is the mass in grams of 0.750 moles of anhydrous copper(II) sulfate (CuSO4)? (Atomic masses: Cu = 63.55 g/mol, S = 32.06 g/mol, O = 16.00 g/mol)
A.95.5 g
B.159.6 g
C.142.1 g
D.119.7 g
Explanation: The molar mass of CuSO4 is 63.55 + 32.06 + 4(16.00) = 159.61 g/mol. Multiplying molar mass by moles gives: mass = 0.750 mol * 159.61 g/mol = 119.7 g.
5An unknown organic compound contains 40.0% carbon, 6.7% hydrogen, and 53.3% oxygen by mass. What is its empirical formula? (Atomic masses: C = 12.01 g/mol, H = 1.01 g/mol, O = 16.00 g/mol)
A.CH2O
B.C2H4O
C.CHO2
D.C3H6O2
Explanation: Assuming a 100 g sample: moles of C = 40.0 / 12.01 = 3.33 mol; moles of H = 6.7 / 1.01 = 6.63 mol; moles of O = 53.3 / 16.00 = 3.33 mol. Dividing by the smallest value (3.33) yields a molar ratio of C : H : O = 1.00 : 1.99 : 1.00, giving the empirical formula CH2O.
6Calcium carbonate decomposes thermally according to: CaCO3(s) -> CaO(s) + CO2(g). When 25.0 g of CaCO3 is heated, a student collects 11.2 g of solid CaO. What is the percent yield of the reaction? (Molar masses: CaCO3 = 100.1 g/mol, CaO = 56.1 g/mol)
A.44.8%
B.80.0%
C.74.7%
D.89.6%
Explanation: Moles of CaCO3 = 25.0 g / 100.1 g/mol = 0.2498 mol. In a 1:1 reaction, the theoretical yield of CaO is 0.2498 mol * 56.1 g/mol = 14.01 g. The percent yield is (actual yield / theoretical yield) * 100% = (11.2 g / 14.01 g) * 100% = 80.0%.
7What mass of carbon dioxide (CO2) is generated by the complete combustion of 4.41 g of propane gas (C3H8)? (Molar masses: C3H8 = 44.1 g/mol, CO2 = 44.0 g/mol)
A.13.2 g
B.4.40 g
C.8.80 g
D.17.6 g
Explanation: The balanced combustion equation is C3H8 + 5 O2 -> 3 CO2 + 4 H2O. Moles of propane burned = 4.41 g / 44.1 g/mol = 0.100 mol. According to the 1:3 stoichiometry, moles of CO2 formed = 3 * 0.100 mol = 0.300 mol. Mass of CO2 = 0.300 mol * 44.0 g/mol = 13.2 g.
8A laboratory analyst dissolves 9.81 g of pure sulfuric acid (H2SO4, molar mass 98.1 g/mol) in distilled water to prepare exactly 250 mL of aqueous solution. What is the molarity (M) of this solution?
A.0.100 M
B.0.250 M
C.0.800 M
D.0.400 M
Explanation: Moles of solute = 9.81 g / 98.1 g/mol = 0.100 mol. Volume of solution in liters = 250 mL / 1000 mL/L = 0.250 L. Molarity = moles / volume (L) = 0.100 mol / 0.250 L = 0.400 M.
9What is the complete factorization into linear binomials of the quadratic polynomial 2x^2 + 5x - 3?
A.(2x - 1)(x + 3)
B.(2x + 1)(x - 3)
C.(2x + 3)(x - 1)
D.(x + 1)(2x - 3)
Explanation: To factor 2x^2 + 5x - 3, we seek two numbers whose product is 2 * (-3) = -6 and whose sum is +5. These numbers are +6 and -1. Rewriting the middle term: 2x^2 + 6x - x - 3 = 2x(x + 3) - 1(x + 3) = (2x - 1)(x + 3).
10A rectangular sheet has area 120 cm² and its length is 7 cm greater than its width. What are its positive dimensions?
A.Width 5 cm; length 24 cm
B.Width 10 cm; length 12 cm
C.Width 8 cm; length 15 cm
D.Width 6 cm; length 20 cm
Explanation: Writing width as w gives w(w + 7) = 120, so (w + 15)(w − 8) = 0. The negative root is not a physical width. Thus width is 8 cm and length is 15 cm, satisfying both the area and difference conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Pre-Admisión require a faculty course?

No. It is the directly sittable first stage. Successful ranked applicants proceed to the binding CPI. The current website states 300 places; the 2026 regulation lets the faculty set the number for each call.

What does the subsequent CPI require?

The published 2027 cycle has a ten-week CPI. It requires 60% attendance and assesses Chemistry and Exact Sciences (Mathematics and Physics). Each subject has two 30-point partials, which may be MCQ and/or worked-response assessments, and a 40-item MCQ final. No separate oral, laboratory, or case-study entrance test was identified.

Must I have graduated before Pre-Admisión registration?

The 2026 regulation's Pre-Admisión registration list requires identity and registration materials, not a completed school certificate. The secondary certificate and title requirements apply to subsequent enrollment. Check the current call before applying.
