1According to the fluid mosaic model of cellular membranes, what primary role does cholesterol play in the plasma membrane of animal cells?
A.It serves as the main primary active transporter of potassium ions
B.It stabilizes membrane fluidity across temperature fluctuations
C.It synthesizes ribosomal RNA within the lipid bilayer
D.It forms the rigid cell wall preventing osmotic lysis
Explanation: Cholesterol functions as a bidirectional fluidity buffer in eukaryotic plasma membranes. At high physiological temperatures, it restricts the movement of phospholipid fatty acid chains to prevent excessive fluidity, while at lower temperatures, it hinders tight packing to prevent crystallization.
2Which organelle is responsible for synthesizing, folding, and post-translationally modifying secretory proteins destined for export from the cell?
A.Smooth endoplasmic reticulum
B.Rough endoplasmic reticulum
C.Centrosome
D.Cytosolic proteasome
Explanation: The rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER) is characterized by membrane-bound ribosomes on its cytosolic face. Nascent peptide chains possessing an amino-terminal signal peptide are translocated into the RER lumen, where chaperone proteins facilitate folding, disulfide bond formation, and initial core glycosylation prior to vesicular transport to the Golgi apparatus.
3During which phase of meiotic cell division do homologous chromosomes pair up and exchange genetic material through crossing over (chiasma formation)?
A.Metaphase II
B.Anaphase I
C.Prophase I
D.Telophase II
Explanation: Synapsis of homologous maternal and paternal chromosomes and genetic recombination (crossing over) occur exclusively during Prophase I of meiosis. This exchange between non-sister chromatids creates novel allele combinations, increasing genetic diversity in the resulting gametes.
4Why are viruses classified as obligate intracellular parasites rather than free-living cellular microorganisms?
A.They possess peptidoglycan cell walls that prevent binary fission in nutrient broth
B.They undergo sexual reproduction only within eukaryotic nuclear membranes
C.They contain both double-stranded DNA and double-stranded RNA within their capsids
D.They lack metabolic machinery and ribosomes, requiring host cell machinery to replicate
Explanation: Viruses lack ribosomes and an independent energy-generating metabolism. Some carry or encode enzymes used in replication, but they still need living host cells to produce viral proteins and new virus particles.
5An atom of carbon-14 has an atomic number (Z) of 6 and a mass number (A) of 14. How many protons, neutrons, and electrons are present in a neutral carbon-14 atom?
A.6 protons, 14 neutrons, and 6 electrons
B.6 protons, 8 neutrons, and 6 electrons
C.8 protons, 6 neutrons, and 8 electrons
D.14 protons, 6 neutrons, and 14 electrons
Explanation: The atomic number Z = 6 indicates the atom has 6 protons. In a neutral atom, the number of electrons equals the number of protons (6 electrons). The mass number A = 14 is the sum of protons and neutrons, meaning neutrons = A - Z = 14 - 6 = 8 neutrons.
6Across a period from left to right on the periodic table, what happens to atomic radius, and what causes this trend?
A.Atomic radius increases because additional electron shells are added
B.Atomic radius remains constant because shielding effect perfectly balances nuclear charge
C.Atomic radius decreases due to increasing effective nuclear charge attracting electrons closer
D.Atomic radius increases due to strong electron-electron repulsion in the s-orbital
Explanation: Moving from left to right across a period, protons are added to the nucleus while electrons are added to the same principal energy level. Because inner-shell shielding remains relatively constant, the effective nuclear charge (Zeff) increases, drawing the valence electron cloud closer to the nucleus and decreasing atomic radius.
7How many valence electrons are present in a neutral atom of chlorine (atomic number 17), belonging to Group 17 (halogens)?
A.5 valence electrons
B.8 valence electrons
C.1 valence electron
D.7 valence electrons
Explanation: Chlorine (Z = 17) has the ground-state electron configuration 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p5. The outermost principal energy level (n = 3) contains 2 electrons in the 3s orbital and 5 electrons in the 3p orbitals, giving a total of 7 valence electrons.
8Which type of chemical bond is formed when one or more valence electrons are completely transferred from a metal atom to a nonmetal atom?
A.Nonpolar covalent bond
B.Ionic bond
C.Polar covalent bond
D.Coordinate covalent bond
Explanation: An ionic bond results from the electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions formed by the complete transfer of valence electrons, typically from a low-electronegativity metal (forming a cation) to a high-electronegativity nonmetal (forming an anion), such as in NaCl.
9What is the correct chemical formula and oxidation state of iron in ferric hydroxide (iron(III) hydroxide)?
A.Fe(OH)2, with an iron oxidation state of +2
B.Fe2O3, with an iron oxidation state of +2
C.Fe(OH)3, with an iron oxidation state of +3
D.FeH3, with an iron oxidation state of -3
Explanation: The suffix '-ic' in traditional chemical nomenclature (or III in IUPAC Stock notation) denotes the higher common oxidation state of iron (+3). Because each hydroxide polyatomic ion carries a -1 charge (OH-), three hydroxide ions are required to balance the Fe3+ cation, yielding Fe(OH)3.
10A laboratory needs 200 mL of a 0.5 M glucose solution, prepared from a 2.0 M stock solution. What volume of stock is required?
A.25 mL
B.100 mL
C.80 mL
D.50 mL
Explanation: Conservation of solute gives C1V1 = C2V2, so V1 = (0.5 × 200)/2.0 = 50 mL. Dilute that stock with water to a final solution volume of 200 mL; the specified volume is the solution volume, not the water added.

About the FENOB Admission Exam

Independent practice for FENOB admission topics. The faculty offers Enfermería and Obstetricia and permits direct examination without its optional course. Official papers are in Spanish with five alternatives per item. This is an English-language, four-option MCQ study adaptation, not an official translation or format simulation. Spanish comprehension and grammar text is preserved. This resource does not substitute for speaking, writing, or clinical performance practice.

Exam sponsor: Universidad Nacional de Asunción — Facultad de Enfermería y Obstetricia. The requirements and fees below concern the certification or admission exam, separate from our free practice resources.

1Start with the official Biology programme rather than advanced clinical material.
2Track solute quantity and final volume separately.
3Distinguish direct from inverse proportion.
4Interpret Spanish passages before consulting English feedback.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the course and an oral entrance test compulsory?

The course is optional. The admission regulation specifies written MCQs, including Comunicación Oral y Escrita; the subject name does not establish a separate oral test. No separate practical or case-study entrance component was identified.

How does the minimum score work?

Applicants need at least 60% of 200 aggregate points and a ranking within available places. Tie-breaks use Communication, Biology, Mathematics, then Chemistry. Fifty points per paper must not be interpreted as fifty questions.

Is this a Nursing and Nutrition faculty?

The official faculty is Facultad de Enfermería y Obstetricia (FENOB). Nutrition belongs to FCQ-UNA. The mistaken FAEN candidate name does not identify a separate examination.
