1Under the Regulamento da Habilitação Legal para Conduzir (RHLC), which vehicles does Category D cover?
A.Motor vehicles for up to 16 passengers excluding the driver, with a maximum length of 8 m
B.Any motor vehicle with a maximum authorized mass above 3,500 kg
C.Motor vehicles designed and built to carry more than eight passengers, excluding the driver
D.Only articulated buses and double-deck coaches used on scheduled routes
Explanation: RHLC article 3 defines Category D as motor vehicles designed and constructed to carry more than eight passengers in addition to the driver, with an optional trailer of up to 750 kg maximum authorized mass. A Category D licence also covers D1 vehicles.
2Which description matches Category D1 under the RHLC?
A.Up to 16 passengers excluding the driver and a maximum length of 8 m
B.Up to 22 passengers excluding the driver and a maximum length of 10 m
C.Up to 8 passengers excluding the driver and a maximum mass of 7,500 kg
D.Any bus used only on urban services, regardless of its size
Explanation: RHLC article 3 defines D1 as motor vehicles designed for no more than 16 passengers excluding the driver, with a maximum length of 8 m, plus an optional trailer of up to 750 kg. Category D includes D1, and candidates for D1 and D sit the same 20-question theory test.
3A Category D licence holder wants to tow a luggage trailer behind a coach. What is the heaviest trailer the Category D licence alone allows?
A.A trailer of up to 3,500 kg maximum authorized mass
B.A trailer of up to 750 kg maximum authorized mass
C.A trailer of up to 1,500 kg maximum authorized mass
D.No trailer at all, because any trailer requires Category DE
Explanation: Under RHLC article 3, a Category D vehicle may tow a trailer whose maximum authorized mass does not exceed 750 kg. A heavier trailer makes the combination Category DE, which needs its own practical test.
4Which licence must a candidate already hold before they can be licensed for Category D in Portugal?
A.Category C
B.Category D1, held for at least two years
C.Category C1
D.A valid Category B licence
Explanation: RHLC article 21(1)(a) makes a valid Category B licence a prerequisite for categories C1, C, D1 and D. A candidate does not need C, C1 or D1 before applying for Category D.
5Without a driver qualification card (carta de qualificação de motorista, CQM), what is the minimum age to obtain Category D?
A.24 years
B.21 years
C.18 years
D.23 years
Explanation: RHLC article 20(1)(g) sets the minimum age for categories D and DE at 24. The lower ages of 21 or 23 apply only to candidates who hold a CQM obtained under Decree-Law 126/2009.
6A driver obtained the CAM through accelerated initial qualification (formação inicial acelerada, 140 hours). According to IMT, from what age may they drive Category D buses on any type of service?
A.18 years
B.21 years
C.23 years
D.25 years
Explanation: IMT states that a CAM from the 140-hour accelerated initial qualification allows Category D and DE driving from age 23, or from 21 only on regular passenger services whose route does not exceed 50 km. The 280-hour common initial qualification allows D and DE from age 21.
7For medical and psychological fitness purposes, which driver group do Category D candidates belong to?
A.Group 1
B.Group 2
C.Group 3
D.No group, because fitness is checked only at renewal
Explanation: RHLC article 22 places candidates and drivers of categories C1, C1E, C, CE, D1, D1E, D and DE in Group 2, which has stricter fitness standards than Group 1.
8What fitness evidence does the RHLC require from a Group 2 candidate such as a Category D applicant?
A.A medical assessment only, with psychological assessment optional
B.A psychological assessment only, repeated every year
C.A self-declaration of health signed at the driving school
D.Both a medical assessment and a psychological assessment
Explanation: RHLC article 24(2) states that Group 2 candidates and drivers undergo both medical and psychological assessment, and are only considered fit after passing both. IMT lists the electronic medical certificate and a favourable psychological assessment certificate among the documents needed to enrol for Category D.
9Under the current RHLC, how long is a Category D licence valid?
A.5 years at a time, until the driver turns 67; it cannot be revalidated after that
B.15 years at a time, until the driver turns 60
C.5 years at a time until 70, then every 2 years with no upper age limit
D.10 years at a time, with a psychological test at every renewal
Explanation: RHLC article 16(5) states that D1, D1E, D and DE licences are valid for 5 years until the driver reaches 67 and cannot be revalidated after that date. The gov.pt renewal page gives the same rule.
10Which licence is needed to drive an articulated bus (autocarro articulado) in Portugal?
A.Category DE, because the rear section counts as a heavy trailer
B.Category CE, because articulated vehicles are always combinations
C.Category D, because an articulated bus is a single passenger vehicle
D.Category D1, provided the bus is shorter than 18 m
Explanation: An articulated bus is a single motor vehicle built to carry more than eight passengers, so it falls under Category D. The RHLC heavy-vehicle theory programme lists the articulated bus as a topic for these categories. DE is needed only when a separate trailer above 750 kg is coupled.

Portugal IMT Category D: Suggested Study Strategy

1Learn the vehicle definitions: Category D is for more than eight passengers excluding the driver, D1 for up to 16 passengers and 8 m, and both allow a trailer of up to 750 kg.
2Know the bus speed limits in Codigo da Estrada article 27: 50 km/h in localities, 80 km/h on other roads, 90 km/h on vias reservadas (with or without a trailer) and 100 km/h on autoestradas.
3Master air-brake behaviour: low-pressure warnings, spring brakes, building pressure before moving off, and using retarders without locking the driven wheels.
4Memorize the Regulation 561/2006 numbers: 4.5 hours before a 45-minute break, 9 hours of daily driving, 56 and 90-hour limits, and 11-hour daily and 45-hour weekly rests.
5Study the level-crossing emergency steps in the RHLC programme: break through the barriers to clear the track, or evacuate and call the number on the crossing sign or 112.
