Sample EGEL Plus Odontología Practice Questions

Try these sample questions to review concepts for the EGEL Plus Odontología exam. Each question includes a detailed explanation. Start the interactive quiz above for the full 100+ question experience with AI tutoring.

1Before an elective filling, an adult patient has a blood pressure of 186/114 mmHg and no symptoms. What should the dentist do?
A.Proceed with a local anesthetic without epinephrine
B.Give sublingual nifedipine and continue
C.Defer elective care and refer to a physician
D.Proceed if the patient feels well
Explanation: A blood pressure of 180/110 mmHg or higher contraindicates elective dental treatment. The patient is referred for prompt medical evaluation, and only urgent care for pain or infection is provided, with medical support.
2A healthy 60-kg adult needs 2% lidocaine with epinephrine. Using a maximum dose of 4.4 mg/kg and 36 mg of lidocaine per 1.8 mL cartridge, about how many cartridges is the upper limit?
A.About 4 cartridges
B.About 7 cartridges
C.About 12 cartridges
D.About 2 cartridges
Explanation: Maximum dose = 60 kg × 4.4 mg/kg = 264 mg. Each cartridge has 36 mg (20 mg/mL × 1.8 mL), so 264 ÷ 36 ≈ 7.3, or about 7 cartridges. Doses are lower in children, older adults and patients with liver disease.
3What maximum epinephrine dose per appointment is usually recommended for a patient with significant cardiovascular disease?
A.0.04 mg, about two cartridges at 1:100,000
B.0.2 mg, about eleven cartridges at 1:100,000
C.0.5 mg, about 28 cartridges at 1:100,000
D.No limit if lidocaine is used
Explanation: A 1.8 mL cartridge at 1:100,000 contains 0.018 mg of epinephrine, so the cardiac limit of 0.04 mg equals about two cartridges. Aspiration and slow injection reduce intravascular injection.
4A young patient becomes pale, sweaty and faints during the injection of a local anesthetic. What is the first step?
A.Give an intravenous corticosteroid
B.Sit the patient upright with the head between the knees
C.Inject epinephrine intramuscularly
D.Lay the patient flat with legs raised
Explanation: Vasovagal syncope is the most common office emergency. Laying the patient flat with the legs elevated restores cerebral blood flow; airway, breathing and pulse are checked and oxygen is given, and recovery is usually quick.
5Minutes after receiving amoxicillin, an adult develops hives, wheezing and hypotension. Which drug is given first?
A.An oral antihistamine such as loratadine
B.Intramuscular epinephrine
C.Intravenous diazepam
D.Sublingual nitroglycerin
Explanation: Anaphylaxis is treated first with intramuscular epinephrine (1 mg/mL, 0.01 mg/kg up to 0.5 mg in adults) in the anterolateral thigh, repeated every 5 to 15 minutes if needed, with emergency services called, oxygen and positioning.
6A patient with type 1 diabetes who skipped breakfast becomes confused, sweaty and shaky in the chair but can swallow. What should be given?
A.Insulin
B.15 to 20 g of oral glucose or sugar
C.Water only
D.An intramuscular corticosteroid
Explanation: These are signs of hypoglycemia. A conscious patient receives 15 to 20 g of fast-acting sugar, and glucose is rechecked after 15 minutes. An unconscious patient needs glucagon or intravenous dextrose and emergency help.
7During adult basic life support by a single rescuer, which compression technique is correct?
A.60 compressions per minute, 2 cm deep, 15:2
B.100 to 120 per minute, at least 5 cm deep, 30:2
C.150 per minute, 8 cm deep, 30:1
D.Compressions only after 10 rescue breaths
Explanation: High-quality adult CPR uses 100 to 120 compressions per minute, a depth of at least 5 cm (no more than 6 cm), full chest recoil, minimal interruptions and a 30:2 ratio, with an AED used as soon as available.
8A patient on warfarin needs a simple extraction. His INR taken the day before is 2.6. What is the usual approach?
A.Stop warfarin for a week before the extraction
B.Switch to heparin in hospital
C.Keep warfarin and use local hemostasis
D.Postpone until the INR is 1.0
Explanation: Simple extractions can usually be done without stopping warfarin when the INR is within the therapeutic range (up to about 3.5), using sutures, hemostatic sponges, pressure and tranexamic acid, because stopping increases the risk of thrombosis.
9Which patient has the highest risk of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw after an extraction?
A.A woman taking oral alendronate for 1 year
B.A cancer patient on IV zoledronic acid
C.A patient taking metformin
D.A patient taking ibuprofen for 3 days
Explanation: High-dose intravenous antiresorptives (zoledronic acid, denosumab) for cancer carry the greatest risk. Oral bisphosphonates for osteoporosis carry a much lower risk, which rises with duration beyond about 4 years.
10A patient with a prosthetic heart valve and a penicillin allergy needs an extraction. According to the 2021 AHA statement, which prophylactic regimen is appropriate?
A.Clindamycin 600 mg orally 30 to 60 minutes before
B.Amoxicillin 2 g
C.Azithromycin 500 mg 30 to 60 minutes before
D.No prophylaxis is needed
Explanation: High-risk patients (such as those with prosthetic valves) receive prophylaxis for procedures that manipulate gingiva or periapical tissue. The standard is amoxicillin 2 g; with penicillin allergy, azithromycin or clarithromycin 500 mg or doxycycline 100 mg. The AHA no longer recommends clindamycin.

4Review RPBI handling under NOM-087 (red bags, yellow bags and rigid red sharps containers), hand hygiene, the Spaulding classification and surface disinfection.
5Review endodontic, pediatric, restorative, prosthetic and surgical decisions, and practice Spanish reading and indirect writing for the transversal section, which this bank does not cover.

The guide's normative references include NOM-013-SSA2-2015 on the prevention and control of oral diseases (fluorides, sterilization, biosafety and amalgam handling), NOM-087-SEMARNAT-SSA1-2002 on biological-infectious hazardous waste (RPBI) and NOM-004-SSA3-2012 on the clinical record and informed consent.

Why is this practice bank in English if the official exam is in Spanish?

This bank is an independent English-language study adaptation with four-option questions, not an official translation or format simulation, so you can review the dental content. Mexican terms such as NOM, RPBI and CPOD are kept in Spanish so they match your references. The bank covers the disciplinary areas only.
