1An adult woman weighs 82 kg and is 1.60 m tall. What is her body mass index (BMI) and its WHO classification?
A.28.0 kg/m², overweight
B.51.3 kg/m², obesity class III
C.32.0 kg/m², obesity class I
D.35.2 kg/m², obesity class II
Explanation: BMI = weight ÷ height² = 82 ÷ (1.60 × 1.60) = 82 ÷ 2.56 = 32.0 kg/m². A BMI of 30.0 to 34.9 is obesity class I.
2A patient's usual weight was 70 kg and she now weighs 63 kg after 3 months of poor intake. How is this unintentional weight loss classified?
A.10%, severe weight loss for that period
B.7%, significant but not severe
C.11%, moderate weight loss
D.10%, not clinically significant
Explanation: Weight loss % = (70 − 63) ÷ 70 × 100 = 10%. Common criteria (Blackburn) consider more than 7.5% in 3 months to be severe, so this loss warrants full nutritional assessment and intervention.
3Under the GLIM criteria, which combination confirms a diagnosis of malnutrition in an adult who screened at risk?
A.Two phenotypic criteria, without an etiologic criterion
B.At least one phenotypic and one etiologic criterion
C.Low serum albumin plus reduced food intake
D.A positive screening result on its own
Explanation: GLIM uses screening first and then requires at least one phenotypic criterion (weight loss, low BMI or reduced muscle mass) and at least one etiologic criterion (reduced intake or assimilation, or disease burden and inflammation). Severity is then graded from the phenotypic criteria.
4A patient has a mid-upper arm circumference of 26 cm and a triceps skinfold of 10 mm. What is the mid-upper arm muscle circumference?
A.16.0 cm
B.29.1 cm
C.25.7 cm
D.22.9 cm
Explanation: Arm muscle circumference = arm circumference − (π × triceps skinfold in cm) = 26 − (3.14 × 1.0) = 22.9 cm. It estimates somatic protein (muscle) reserves.
5Which waist circumference cut-offs are commonly used in Mexican guidelines to identify abdominal obesity in adults?
A.≥80 cm in women and ≥90 cm in men
B.≥70 cm in women and ≥80 cm in men
C.≥88 cm in women and ≥102 cm in men only
D.≥100 cm in both sexes
Explanation: Mexican standards, such as NOM-008-SSA3-2017 on overweight and obesity, and clinical practice guidelines use a waist circumference of 80 cm or more in women and 90 cm or more in men to define abdominal obesity in the Mexican population.
6Using the WHO Child Growth Standards, which indicator and cut-off define stunting (talla baja) in a child under 5?
A.Weight-for-age below −1 SD
B.Length or height-for-age below −2 SD
C.Weight-for-length below −3 SD
D.BMI-for-age above +2 SD
Explanation: Stunting is a length- or height-for-age z-score below −2 SD of the WHO median and reflects chronic undernutrition and repeated infections. Below −3 SD is severe stunting.
7A 3-year-old has a weight-for-height z-score of −2.4 and a normal height-for-age. How is this child's nutritional status classified?
A.Stunting (chronic undernutrition)
B.Normal growth
C.Overweight
D.Moderate wasting (acute undernutrition)
Explanation: A weight-for-height (or weight-for-length) z-score between −2 and −3 SD indicates moderate wasting, a sign of recent weight loss or acute undernutrition. Height-for-age is normal, so there is no stunting.
8In children and adolescents aged 5 to 19, which WHO criterion defines obesity?
A.BMI-for-age above +1 SD
B.BMI of 30 kg/m² or more, as in adults
C.BMI-for-age above +2 SD
D.Weight-for-age above the 75th percentile
Explanation: For ages 5 to 19, the WHO reference defines overweight as a BMI-for-age above +1 SD and obesity as above +2 SD. Adult BMI cut-offs are not used during growth.
9What distinguishes the Subjective Global Assessment (Valoración Global Subjetiva) from other assessment methods?
A.It depends on serum albumin and total lymphocyte count
B.It uses only history and physical examination
C.It requires bioelectrical impedance to classify the patient
D.It is used only in children under 5
Explanation: The Subjective Global Assessment rates weight change, intake, gastrointestinal symptoms, functional capacity and disease demands, plus a physical examination of fat, muscle and edema, to classify patients as A (well nourished), B (moderate or suspected malnutrition) or C (severe).
10A patient eats 90 g of protein a day and excretes 12 g of urinary urea nitrogen in 24 hours. Using 4 g for other losses, what is the nitrogen balance?
A.+2.4 g/day
B.−1.6 g/day
C.+1.6 g/day
D.−5.6 g/day
Explanation: Nitrogen intake = 90 ÷ 6.25 = 14.4 g. Losses = 12 + 4 = 16 g. Balance = 14.4 − 16 = −1.6 g/day, a mildly negative balance that suggests protein needs are not being met.

EGEL Plus Nutrición: Suggested Study Strategy

1Practice assessment calculations: BMI, percentage weight loss, arm muscle circumference, nitrogen balance, Mifflin-St Jeor and WHO growth z-scores for stunting, wasting and obesity.
2Review medical nutrition therapy for diabetes (SMAE equivalents, carbohydrate counting, the rule of 15), kidney disease (KDOQI 2020 protein ranges), liver disease, refeeding syndrome and enteral nutrition.
3Study population nutrition tools: ELCSA, CONEVAL's food deprivation indicator, SWOT, the logical framework, SMART objectives, coverage and targeting errors, and process versus impact evaluation.
4Know current Mexican food policy: NOM-043-SSA2-2012, NOM-051 warning seals (phase 3 since October 2025), the 2023 dietary guidelines and the school food rules in force since March 2025.
5Review NOM-251-SSA1-2009 temperatures (63, 68 and 74 °C cooking; above 60 °C hot and 7 °C or less cold holding), food-service calculations and food science, and practice Spanish reading and indirect writing for the transversal section, which this bank does not cover.
