Sample EGEL Plus Economía Practice Questions

Try these sample questions to review concepts for the EGEL Plus Economía exam. Each question includes a detailed explanation. Start the interactive quiz above for the full 100+ question experience with AI tutoring.

1A consumer has the utility function U(X, Y) = X^0.5 × Y^0.5. The price of X is MXN 10, the price of Y is MXN 20, and income is MXN 400. What is the utility-maximizing bundle?
A.X = 20, Y = 10
B.X = 10, Y = 20
C.X = 25, Y = 7.5
D.X = 40, Y = 0
Explanation: With symmetric Cobb-Douglas utility the consumer spends half of income on each good: MXN 200 / 10 = 20 units of X and MXN 200 / 20 = 10 units of Y. At this bundle MRS = Y/X = 0.5 = Px/Py.
2A consumer's utility function is U(X, Y) = X^0.4 × Y^0.6. What is the marginal rate of substitution MRS = MUx / MUy at X = 2 and Y = 6?
A.1.50
B.2.00
C.3.00
D.0.67
Explanation: MRS = (0.4 / 0.6) × (Y / X) = (2/3) × (6 / 2) = 2.00.
3Market demand for a crop is Q = 120 - 3P. What is the point price elasticity of demand at P = 20?
A.-0.50
B.-0.33
C.-1.00
D.-3.00
Explanation: At P = 20, Q = 120 - 60 = 60. Elasticity = (dQ/dP) × (P/Q) = -3 × (20/60) = -1.00, so demand is unit elastic at this point.
4When household income rises from MXN 10,000 to MXN 12,000 a month, the quantity demanded of good Z rises from 50 to 55 units. How is good Z classified?
A.Inferior good, income elasticity of -0.50
B.Luxury good, income elasticity of +2.00
C.Giffen good, income elasticity of -1.00
D.Normal necessity, income elasticity of +0.50
Explanation: Income rises 20% and quantity rises 10%, so income elasticity = 10% / 20% = +0.50. A value between 0 and 1 indicates a normal necessity.
5The cross-price elasticity of demand for good X with respect to the price of good Y is +0.75. What does this indicate?
A.X and Y are substitutes
B.X and Y are complements bought in fixed proportions
C.X and Y are independent, because the value is below 1
D.X and Y are inferior goods, because the sign is positive
Explanation: A positive cross-price elasticity means a higher price of Y raises the quantity demanded of X, as consumers switch from Y to X.
6How does the Hicksian (compensated) demand function differ from the Marshallian (ordinary) demand function?
A.Hicksian demand holds money income constant; Marshallian holds utility constant
B.Hicksian demand holds utility constant, so it shows only the substitution effect
C.Hicksian demand applies only to Giffen goods, and Marshallian only to normal goods
D.Hicksian demand curves slope upward, and Marshallian demand curves slope downward
Explanation: Marshallian demand comes from maximizing utility with fixed money income, so it includes both substitution and income effects. Hicksian demand comes from minimizing expenditure to reach a fixed utility level, so it shows only the substitution effect.
7According to the Slutsky equation, when the price of a normal good rises, how do the substitution and income effects act?
A.The substitution effect reduces consumption, but the income effect raises it and offsets it
B.The substitution effect is zero, and the whole change comes from the income effect
C.Both reduce the quantity demanded
D.The income effect raises consumption because consumers feel richer when prices rise
Explanation: The substitution effect of a price increase is always negative. For a normal good, the fall in real income also reduces consumption, so both effects work in the same direction.
8A regulator raises the price of electricity and wants to measure the welfare loss. Which statement correctly defines compensating variation (CV) and equivalent variation (EV)?
A.CV is the income removed at the initial prices; EV is the income added at the new prices
B.CV uses the original prices, while EV is the area under the Marshallian demand curve
C.CV and EV are always equal, whatever the consumer's utility function
D.CV: income at new prices to restore old utility; EV: income removed at old prices
Explanation: CV = e(p1, u0) - e(p1, u1): the money that, at the new prices, would leave the consumer as well off as before. EV = e(p0, u0) - e(p0, u1): the money that, taken away at the old prices, would hurt the consumer as much as the price rise.
9A consumer lives for two periods and maximizes U = ln(C1) + β ln(C2). The real interest rate is r. What condition characterizes optimal consumption?
A.C2 / C1 = β(1 + r)
B.C2 / C1 = (1 + r) / β
C.C1 + C2 = β(1 + r)
D.C1 / C2 = β(1 + r)
Explanation: The Euler equation is MU(C1) = β(1 + r) MU(C2). With log utility, 1/C1 = β(1 + r)/C2, so C2/C1 = β(1 + r).
10What does the Weak Axiom of Revealed Preference (WARP) require?
A.The consumer always chooses the bundle with the lowest total outlay
B.If A is chosen when B is affordable, B is never chosen when A is affordable
C.Indifference curves must be linear, with constant marginal rates of substitution
D.The consumer must buy the same bundle whatever prices and income are
Explanation: If A is revealed preferred to B, then B can never be revealed preferred to A. WARP is a consistency requirement on observed choices.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the EGEL Plus Economía?

The EGEL Plus Economía (EGEL Plus ECONO) is Ceneval's national exit examination for graduates of the Licenciatura en Economía and related programs. It measures microeconomics, macroeconomics and investment project evaluation, plus Spanish reading comprehension and indirect writing. Institutions may use the result as a graduation requirement, a titulación option or part of a course grade, under their own rules.

How many questions are on the official EGEL Plus ECONO and how long is it?

The official exam has 205 items: 145 disciplinary items (Microeconomía 50, Macroeconomía 50, Proyectos de inversión 45) and 60 Lenguaje y Comunicación items. It is given on one day in two sessions of 4.5 hours each (9 hours). About 15% of the items are pilot items that do not count toward the result.

Is the EGEL Plus ECONO given on paper?

No. The current guide lists two modes only: online at the institution's site and remotely through Ceneval's Examen desde casa platform. A non-programmable scientific calculator is allowed and may not be lent between candidates.

Does the EGEL Plus ECONO include econometrics?

Not as a separate area. The official descriptors for Proyectos de inversión ask candidates to interpret the coefficients of an econometric model, so this bank includes a few items on R², t statistics and log-log elasticities within that area.

Why is this practice bank in English if the official exam is in Spanish?

The official Ceneval exam is in Spanish. This bank is an independent English-language study adaptation with four-option questions, not an official translation or format simulation. Mexican statistical and policy terms are kept in Spanish so they match your sources. The bank covers the disciplinary areas only.
