The California BSCC Selection Exam is one multiple-choice test, about 2 hours 30 minutes long, that county jails, juvenile halls, and probation departments in the STC program use to screen entry-level Adult Corrections Officer, Juvenile Corrections Officer, and Probation Officer applicants. It tests basic abilities rather than corrections knowledge: spelling, grammar, reading, applying written rules, and adding and subtracting whole numbers without a calculator. BSCC publishes no item count or pass rate; each agency sets its own T-score cut point, and posted examples include 40, 42, and 47.

What is the required procedure when handling verified legal mail?
4Which of the following words contains a spelling error?
5A probation department directive instructs: 'Probation officers conducting home visits shall verify the probationer's current residential address, confirm employment status, and visually inspect accessible common living areas. If unauthorized weapons, controlled substances, or drug paraphernalia are observed in plain view, the officer shall immediately disengage, retreat to a secure perimeter, and request law enforcement assistance.' What must the officer do if illegal narcotics are observed on a living room table?
6A county jail grievance policy states: 'An inmate grievance alleging staff misconduct or unsafe living conditions must receive a written response from a supervisor within 10 business days of submission. If the inmate is dissatisfied with the response, an appeal must be filed within 5 calendar days of receipt.' Based on this excerpt, which deadline applies to the inmate's appeal?
7Policy Excerpt: 'Safety cell placement is reserved for detainees whose violent behavior displays an immediate danger to themselves or others. Placement shall not exceed 48 continuous hours without a written reassessment by a qualified mental health clinician. Direct visual observation by custody staff must be conducted and logged at least once every 15 minutes. Inmates housed in safety cells shall be permitted medical staff evaluation within 12 hours of placement.' An inmate was placed in a safety cell at 1400 hours on Friday. By what time must a medical evaluation occur, and what is the observation interval?
8A county jail housing policy states: 'Adult detention facilities must maintain strict separation between sentenced inmates and unsentenced detainees, as well as between violent offenders and non-violent misdemeanor detainees. When searching a shared residence, officers may only search common areas and areas under the probationer's exclusive control, not the private bedrooms of non-probationer roommates.' Under this guideline, which search is unauthorized?
About the California BSCC / STC Entry-Level Selection Exam Exam
The BSCC Selection Exam is the single written test that the Board of State and Community Corrections makes available to local agencies in its Standards and Training for Corrections (STC) program for entry-level Adult Corrections Officer, Juvenile Corrections Officer, and Probation Officer hiring. It takes about 2 hours 30 minutes and is entirely multiple choice, given on paper or by computer as each agency chooses. The 2026 Candidate Orientation Booklet lists ten item types: spelling, grammar, identify a difference, understanding passages, logical sequences, appropriate placement, level of priority, forms, scenarios, and whole-number addition and subtraction. Candidates pass or fail on their total score, and each agency sets its own cut point. This bank is independent practice by OpenExamPrep for those item types.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the BSCC Selection Exam?
It is the written exam the Board of State and Community Corrections (BSCC) makes available to local agencies that participate in its Standards and Training for Corrections (STC) program. One exam covers the entry-level Adult Corrections Officer, Juvenile Corrections Officer, and Probation Officer classifications, so county jails, juvenile halls, and probation departments can use the same test.
How does the BSCC exam differ from the CDCR exam?
The BSCC Selection Exam is used by local agencies such as county sheriff's offices and probation departments. The CDCR Correctional Officer Written Selection Exam is a separate test for California state prison correctional officers.
How many questions are on the BSCC exam, and how long is it?
BSCC does not publish the number of questions. The Candidate Orientation Booklet says the exam has several sections of multiple-choice items and takes about 2 hours 30 minutes in both the paper-and-pencil and computer-based formats.
What score do I need to pass the BSCC exam?
There is no single statewide passing score. You pass or fail on your total score, and each hiring agency sets its own pass point, usually reported as a T-score. Posted county examples include a T-score of 40 (Yolo County), 42 (Sutter County), and 47 (San Joaquin County).
Does it cost money to take the BSCC exam?
BSCC does not publish a candidate fee. Its published fees are charged to agencies through CPS-HR Consulting, such as a $190 base fee plus per-candidate fees for paper exams, or a $215 base fee plus $48 per candidate for remote proctoring. Ask your hiring agency whether it charges applicants anything.
What subjects are covered on the BSCC exam?
The booklet lists ten item types: spelling, grammar, identify a difference, understanding passages, logical sequences, appropriate placement, level of priority, forms, scenarios, and basic addition and subtraction. Calculators are not allowed in the exam room.
Can I use my BSCC score at another agency?
Some agencies accept a recent BSCC T-score from another agency instead of a retest. For example, Yolo County and San Joaquin County job bulletins accept a BSCC T-score earned within the last 12 months, verified on the testing agency's letterhead. Rules vary, so check each job bulletin.
Do I need corrections experience or knowledge of Title 15?
No. The exam measures basic knowledge, skills, and abilities needed at the point of hire, and the booklet's sample items use everyday scenarios. Job-specific training comes after hire in the STC core course required by 15 CCR § 131.
Are these official BSCC exam questions?
No. This is independent practice by OpenExamPrep. The questions are original and cover the item types described in BSCC's Candidate Orientation Booklet; they are not actual exam items.
