About the WA POST Exam

Washington has no single state peace officer certification exam. Entry-level officers of general authority agencies must attend the 720-hour Basic Law Enforcement Academy (BLEA) run by the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission (WSCJTC) within six months of hire and pass its written examinations, which cover Washington criminal law under RCW Title 9A, constitutional procedures, patrol operations, use of force, and professional standards. Certification also depends on the background requirements of RCW 43.101.095.

Exam sponsor: Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission (WSCJTC). The requirements and fees below concern the certification or admission exam, separate from our free practice resources.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the WA POST vocabulary game free?

Yes. The game is free to play with no sign-up. Signing in adds AI explanations for any term.

How do the WA POST vocabulary games work?

There are 4 games built on 20 WA POST terms. In Guess the Term, a clue describes one term and you have six tries to spell it, with green, yellow and gray letters showing how close you are. In Term Match, six terms appear as colored tiles; swap neighbors to line up three or more of the same term, and each match shows what the term means. In Term Pairs, twelve face-down cards hide six pairs of terms; flip two at a time to find each pair, and every pair you find shows what the term means. In Term Search, five terms hide in a grid of letters, reading across, down or diagonally; drag across a term to circle it, and each term you find shows what it means.

Where do the WA POST terms come from?

OpenExamPrep researched each term from the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission (WSCJTC) content outline and primary sources, listed under Sources on this page. The game is independent study material, not an official exam resource.

What is the WA POST passing score?

WSCJTC does not publish a passing score. Under WAC 139-05-240, BLEA written examinations use a designated minimum passing score with a retesting procedure, and a recruit who fails to reach it is dropped from the academy.

How hard is the Washington peace officer exam?

The WA POST exam is considered moderately difficult. It requires thorough knowledge of RCW Title 9A covering criminal offenses, constitutional law principles including Washington's stronger privacy protections, and patrol operations.
