About the MT POST Exam
Montana certifies peace officers through the Public Safety Officer Standards and Training (POST) Council. After being hired, an officer must complete the council-approved basic course, such as the 12-week Law Enforcement Officer Basic Course at the Montana Law Enforcement Academy, within one year, and receives the basic certificate after at least one year with the appointing agency. The course covers law and criminal procedure, human behavior, patrol operations, traffic enforcement, investigations, survival skills, and health and wellness.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the MT POST vocabulary game free?
Yes. The game is free to play with no sign-up. Signing in adds AI explanations for any term.
How does the MT POST vocabulary game work?
Each round shows a clue for one of 20 MT POST terms. Guess the term in six tries: green means the right letter in the right spot, yellow means the letter is in the term but in another spot, and gray means it is not in the term. After the round, read the explanation and play the next term.
Where do the MT POST terms come from?
OpenExamPrep researched each term from the Montana POST Council (certification); Montana Law Enforcement Academy (basic course) content outline and primary sources, listed under Sources on this page. The game is independent study material, not an official exam resource.
What is the MT POST passing score?
Montana POST does not publish a passing score or question count for a separate certification exam. Peace officers qualify by completing the council-approved basic course, such as the MLEA Law Enforcement Officer Basic Course, whose academic requirements the academy gives students in the course, and by serving at least one year with their appointing agency.
How hard is the Montana peace officer exam?
Montana publishes no pass-rate data. The 12-week Law Enforcement Officer Basic Course covers law and criminal procedure (including the Montana Code Annotated and Montana constitutional law), human behavior, patrol operations, traffic enforcement, investigations, survival skills, and health and wellness, and students must pass the Montana Physical Abilities Test before acceptance.
