About the MT Boiler Operator Exam
Montana's boiler operator (boiler engineer) exam is administered by the Department of Labor and Industry's Boiler Operator Program at local Job Service offices once the department pre-approves the applicant. Montana law sets six engineer classes (first, second, third, agricultural, low-pressure and limited low-pressure), and the department also licenses traction engineers. Low-pressure applicants qualify with 480 hours (3 months) of experience under a licensed boiler operator or an approved 30-hour course plus 40 supervised hours, and every class must pass the Montana written examination covering boiler operations, safety devices, water treatment, combustion principles, and Montana regulations.

How do the MT Boiler Operator vocabulary games work?
There are 4 games built on 20 MT Boiler Operator terms. In Guess the Term, a clue describes one term and you have six tries to spell it, with green, yellow and gray letters showing how close you are. In Term Match, six terms appear as colored tiles; swap neighbors to line up three or more of the same term, and each match shows what the term means. In Term Search, five terms hide in a grid of letters, reading across, down or diagonally; drag across a term to circle it, and each term you find shows what it means.
Where do the MT Boiler Operator terms come from?
OpenExamPrep researched each term from the Montana Dept of Labor and Industry content outline and primary sources, listed under Sources on this page. The game is independent study material, not an official exam resource.
How much experience does Montana require for a low-pressure boiler license?
For a low-pressure license, Montana requires 3 months (480 hours) of experience operating a low-pressure or higher boiler under a licensed boiler operator, or an approved 30-hour training course plus 40 hours of supervised experience. Either route also requires passing the Montana written examination, and the supervising licensed operator signs the experience verification form.
What license grades does Montana issue for boiler operators?
Montana law sets six engineer classes: first-class, second-class, third-class, agricultural-class, low-pressure and limited low-pressure, each limited by boiler pressure, temperature or horsepower; the department also licenses traction engineers. Every class requires passing the Montana written examination. Holding a lower license is one route to second- or first-class licensure, not a requirement: candidates can also qualify with 2 years (second class) or 3 years (first class) of experience in that class.
