About the Illinois CNA Exam
The Illinois CNA exam is the INACE (Illinois Nurse Assistant Competency Exam), administered by Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC) on behalf of the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH). It is an 85-question written test (90 minutes); performance skills are evaluated during the training program by an IDPH Approved Evaluator. Passing certifies you for the Illinois Health Care Worker Registry (HCWR). Illinois requires completion of an IDPH-approved Basic Nurse Assistant Training Program (BNATP) of at least 120 hours (80 classroom + 40 supervised clinical) under Illinois Administrative Code Title 77, Part 395 — more than the 75-hour federal OBRA floor. The written test is given on paper or by computer at community college test sites, or as a Zoom-proctored home-based exam, and an oral (electronic media) version is available as an accommodation. The written exam fee is $85, and candidates have 12 months and up to 3 attempts to pass.

The Illinois Nurse Assistant Competency Exam (INACE) is administered by Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC) on behalf of the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH). Unlike the states that use Credentia's national NNAAP, Illinois has its own SIUC-administered exam system. You register online at inace.nurseaidetesting.com. The written exam fee is $85. You must show competence in all 21 performance skills during your training program and pass the written exam (85 questions, 90 min); results are posted on the Illinois Health Care Worker Registry (HCWR) approximately 2 weeks after testing.
What are Illinois CNA training requirements?
Illinois requires completion of an IDPH-approved Basic Nurse Assistant Training Program (BNATP) of at least 120 hours under Illinois Administrative Code Title 77, Part 395 — exceeding the 75-hour federal OBRA floor. The 120 hours consist of 80 classroom hours (theory plus skills lab) and 40 hours of supervised clinical, including 12+ hours of Alzheimer's/dementia content. Your program coordinator submits your eligibility to SIUC, then you can create an INACE account and schedule your exam.
