Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Hazmat Ops vocabulary game free?

Yes. The game is free to play with no sign-up. Signing in adds AI explanations for any term.

How does the Hazmat Ops vocabulary game work?

Each round shows a clue for one of 20 Hazmat Ops terms. Guess the term in six tries: green means the right letter in the right spot, yellow means the letter is in the term but in another spot, and gray means it is not in the term. After the round, read the explanation and play the next term.

Where do the Hazmat Ops terms come from?

OpenExamPrep researched each term from the NFPA 470 — Pro Board / IFSAC content outline and primary sources, listed under Sources on this page. The game is independent study material, not an official exam resource.

What is the NFPA 470 Hazmat Operations certification?

NFPA 470 Hazardous Materials Operations certifies first responders to perform defensive actions at hazmat or WMD incidents. Operations responders isolate the scene, protect exposures, and contain releases from a safe distance — they do not approach the point of release. NFPA 470 consolidates the former NFPA 472, 473, and 1072 standards and is accredited through Pro Board and IFSAC.

What is the format of the Hazmat Operations exam?

There is no national written form. Each Pro Board or IFSAC certifying entity sets its own exam: Kansas, Missouri and the New Brunswick FCPNB use 100 multiple-choice questions with a 70% pass mark, and Kansas and Missouri allow 2 hours. Core competencies (NFPA 470 Chapter 7) are usually tested together with the mission-specific competencies (Chapter 9) the jurisdiction requires, and skills are evaluated pass/fail.
