Frequently Asked Questions
What is the TAP test?
The TAP (Travel Agent Proficiency) test is The Travel Institute's entry-level credential exam for new travel agents. It's a proctored, 100-question, 2-hour multiple-choice exam pulled from a 150-item bank, covering industry structure, geography and airport codes, time zones, travel products, documentation, and sales skills. A score of 70% or higher is required to pass.
Are there any prerequisites to take the TAP test?
No. TAP has no age minimum, no education requirement, and no prior travel-industry experience requirement — it's designed for people just starting a travel career. This differs from the next credential up, CTA (Certified Travel Associate), which requires 12+ months of verifiable industry experience.
What happens if I fail the TAP test — can I retake it?
Yes. The Travel Institute confirms candidates who don't pass can retake TAP by submitting a new test request form. The Travel Institute does not publish a mandatory waiting period before resubmitting — the main constraint is scheduling lead time (about 3 business days for an online proctor, longer for a paper test).
How much does the TAP test cost?
The standalone TAP test fee is $95. Many candidates instead purchase The Travel Institute's TRIPKIT home-study program (roughly $419-$499), which bundles the test fee together with the official 15-chapter study curriculum.
What's the difference between TAP and the CTA/CTC credentials?
TAP is the entry-level credential with no experience requirement. CTA (Certified Travel Associate) requires 12+ months of industry experience. CTC (Certified Travel Counselor) requires 5+ years of experience plus CTA. CTIE (Certified Travel Industry Executive) is a management-level credential above CTC.
