What does an Ontario regulatory sign tell a rider?

It states a law or legal requirement, such as a permitted movement, prohibited movement, speed limit or parking restriction, and must be obeyed.

What visual pattern usually identifies an Ontario warning sign?

A diamond shape with a yellow background and black letters or symbols, warning of a dangerous or unusual condition ahead.

How do temporary-condition signs usually differ from ordinary warning signs?

They are usually orange-and-black diamonds and warn about temporary hazards such as road work, detours, lane closures or traffic-control personnel.

What action is required at a stop sign when the road appears empty?

Come to a complete stop at the proper stopping point, check for traffic and pedestrians, and proceed only when the way is clear.

What decision does a yield sign require?

Slow down, stop if necessary, and give right-of-way to traffic or pedestrians in or approaching the intersecting path.

What does the orange triangle with a red border on the rear of a vehicle mean?

It is a slow-moving-vehicle sign: the vehicle ahead normally travels at 40 km/h or less, so reduce speed and prepare to pass only when safe.

When does the lower speed shown on a flashing school-zone sign apply?

During the stated school hours when the sign's yellow lights are flashing.

What may a rider do on a green traffic light?

Turn left, go straight or turn right from the proper lane when the way is clear. A left-turning rider must yield to approaching traffic close enough to be a hazard, and any turn must yield to pedestrians crossing the rider's path.

What is the correct response to a steady amber traffic light?

The red light is about to appear: stop if it can be done safely; otherwise continue through with caution.

When may a rider turn at a steady red light?

After a complete stop and yielding, a right turn is allowed unless a sign prohibits it; a left turn is allowed only from a one-way road onto a one-way road when clear.

How do flashing red and flashing amber lights differ?

Flashing red requires a complete stop and proceeding only when safe; flashing amber requires approaching and moving through with caution.

How should a rider treat an intersection whose traffic lights are blank after a power loss?

Use it like an all-way stop: yield to vehicles already in the intersection; if two vehicles arrive at the same time, the driver on the left yields to the driver on the right. Proceed cautiously when clear.

What do the white walking person and the flashing or steady orange hand tell pedestrians?

The white walking person permits starting to cross. Either orange hand means do not begin; a pedestrian already crossing continues to a safe area and retains right-of-way.

Use pavement-line colour alone to identify the traffic-flow relationship: what do yellow and white mean?

Yellow lines separate traffic moving in opposite directions; white lines separate traffic moving in the same direction.

What does a solid versus broken line at the left side of a lane say about passing?

A solid line means passing is unsafe; a broken line allows passing only when the way is clear and there is enough distance to complete it safely.

What do closely spaced, wider broken continuity lines mean when they are on the rider's left?

The current lane generally ends or exits; change lanes safely to continue in the same direction.

Where is the legal stopping point when a stop line is absent?

Stop at the crosswalk; if none, at the edge of the sidewalk; if there is no sidewalk, at the edge of the intersection.

Must an Ontario applicant already hold a Class G licence before applying for Class M1?

No. Motorcycle licensing is the exception to the usual rule that another class requires a Class G licence first.

An eligible applicant has the required identification. Which assessments still stand between that person and an M1 licence?

A vision test, a written traffic-signs test, and a written test of motorcycle knowledge and the rules of the road.

Which study sources does the MTO handbook direct an M1 candidate to use?

The Official MTO Motorcycle Handbook plus the Safe and Responsible Driving and Traffic Signs and Lights material in the Official MTO Driver's Handbook.

What blood-alcohol level must an M1 rider maintain?

Zero; an M1 rider must not ride after consuming alcohol.

What clock-based riding window applies to an M1 licence?

Ride only in daylight, from one-half hour before sunrise until one-half hour after sunset.

Recall Ontario's complete M1 exception list to the rule against roads posted above 80 km/h.

Only the listed exceptions: Highways 11, 17, 61, 69, 71, 101, 102, 144 and 655.

May an M1 rider carry a passenger who is an experienced motorcyclist?

No. The M1 rule requires riding alone, regardless of the passenger's experience.

What helmet rule applies while riding under M1?

Wear an approved motorcycle helmet unless the rider qualifies for Ontario's statutory Sikh helmet exemption.

How long does an M1 licence remain valid, and what follows expiry without advancement?

It is valid for 90 days. If it expires before the rider advances, the licensing process must be started over.

When does an M1 holder first become eligible for the Level One road test?

After holding M1 for at least 60 days; passing that road test advances the rider to M2.

How does a ministry-approved Level One motorcycle safety course affect the M1-to-M2 step?

The course includes the Level One road test, but the 60-day M1 minimum still applies. Present the successful course certificate at DriveTest after day 60 and within the certificate's 6-month validity.

Which licensing wait changes from 22 months to 18 months after a recognized motorcycle safety course?

The M2 holding period before the second road test for a full M licence; it is not the minimum M1-to-M2 period.

How does the motorcycle used for the Level One road test affect the resulting M2 licence?

A limited-speed motorcycle or moped produces M2-L, a three-wheeler produces M2-M, and a full-speed two-wheeled motorcycle produces an unrestricted M2 without L or M condition.

Name the six primary motorcycle controls listed in the official handbook.

Handlebars, throttle, front brake lever, rear brake lever, clutch lever and shift lever; exact locations or availability can vary by vehicle.

What should a pre-ride check confirm about tires, controls and brakes?

Cold-tire pressure, tread and damage are acceptable; controls return and work properly; and the front and rear brakes each hold when tested separately.

Why should a rider use both brakes even though the front brake supplies most stopping power?

The front brake supplies about three-quarters of braking power, but coordinated front-and-rear braking gives effective, controlled stopping and also activates the brake light.

Why are the left or right tire tracks usually safer than the centre of a motorcycle lane?

A tire track improves visibility, spacing and traction while creating a blocking position; the centre often collects oil and becomes slippery when wet.

Two vehicles reach an unsigned, uncontrolled crossing together, one from the left and one from the right. Resolve priority.

The driver on the left yields to the driver on the right.

What must a rider yield to before completing a left turn?

Approaching traffic that is close enough to be a hazard and pedestrians in or approaching the rider's path.

Who has priority when a rider enters a public road from a private driveway?

Vehicles already on the road and pedestrians on the sidewalk; the entering rider must yield to both.

Does activating a turn signal give a rider right-of-way?

No. A signal communicates intent; the rider must still wait until the movement can be made safely and yield where required.

How is priority resolved at an all-way stop?

The first vehicle to stop goes first. If vehicles stop at the same time, the vehicle on the left yields to the vehicle on the right.

Who has right-of-way when a rider enters a roundabout?

Traffic already circulating in the roundabout. Slow down, choose the proper entry lane, yield at the line, and enter only when there is a safe gap.

A crossing guard has cleared the rider's lane but remains on the opposite half of the roadway. May the rider move?

Only after the pedestrians and crossing guard have completely crossed and are safely off the roadway.

What passing restriction protects an Ontario pedestrian crossover?

Do not pass any vehicle within 30 metres of the pedestrian crossover.

How does a median change the school-bus stopping rule?

Traffic behind a stopped bus with red lights or stop arm must stop at least 20 metres away. On a road physically divided by a median, opposing traffic on the other side does not stop for that bus.

Where should a rider stop for an emergency vehicle approaching with lights or siren?

On an ordinary two-way road, stop as near as practical to the right-hand curb or edge. On a one-way road or divided highway with more than two lanes, use the nearest curb or edge. Stay parallel, clear of intersections and off the shoulder.

What must a rider do when approaching a stopped emergency vehicle or tow truck with warning lights?

Reduce speed and proceed cautiously; on a road with at least two same-direction lanes, move to a lane away from it when safe.

What checks belong in a safe motorcycle lane change?

Scan ahead and behind, check mirrors, signal, make a final shoulder check of the blind spot, move smoothly, and cancel the signal.

When may a rider use the right shoulder to pass?

Only to pass a vehicle turning left and only when the right shoulder is paved; passing on the left shoulder is not allowed.

What is required when a transit bus in a bus bay signals left to re-enter traffic?

A rider approaching in the adjacent lane must yield and allow the bus to re-enter.

May a two-way left-turn centre lane be used as a passing lane?

No. It is shared by traffic from both directions only to position for left turns; enter it shortly before the intended turn.

What is the handbook's minimum ordinary following cushion for a motorcycle?

At least 2 seconds behind the vehicle ahead, increased when traffic, weather, visibility or road conditions require more reaction space.

Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly is the Ontario M1 knowledge test?

It is the written knowledge step that, together with the vision screening, leads to the beginner Class M1 licence. It is not the Level One road test used to move from M1 to M2, and it is not the later Level Two road test for a full M licence.

What official subjects should an M1 applicant study?

The Official MTO Motorcycle Handbook identifies traffic signs, motorcycles and rules of the road. It also lists motorcycle controls, lane position, steering, equipment, helmets, passengers and cargo, dangerous surfaces, downshifting and maintenance as possible knowledge-test material.

How many questions are on the Ontario M1 test, and is it timed?

Ontario and DriveTest do not publish a class-specific M1 item count or a fixed M1 section count. DriveTest says knowledge tests generally have two or three sections, are multiple choice and are not timed: candidates may work until the office closes, although a knowledge test typically takes 20 to 30 minutes.

What score is required to pass the M1 knowledge test?

DriveTest publishes a total knowledge-test passing standard of at least 80%. The Ontario Ministry of Transportation and DriveTest do not publish a current M1 candidate pass-rate percentage.

How were these 50 cards allocated across the official content areas?

Ontario identifies study content spanning traffic signs, motorcycle knowledge and rules of the road, but does not publish a fixed three-section M1 blueprint or weights. For this card set only, a neutral one-third allocation gives 16.67 cards per editorial study domain; largest-remainder rounding assigns 17 to Traffic Signs and Signals, 17 to Motorcycle Knowledge and 16 to Rules of the Road. These are study allocations, not official sections or weights.

What restrictions apply after I pass the knowledge test and receive M1?

An M1 rider must maintain zero blood alcohol, ride only from one-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset, carry no passenger, wear an approved helmet unless the statutory Sikh exemption applies, and avoid roads posted over 80 km/h except Ontario's listed highway exceptions.

Does a ministry-approved Level One safety course remove the 60-day M1 wait?

No. The course includes a road test, but the rider must still hold M1 for at least 60 days before moving to M2. The course certificate must be presented at DriveTest after the 60 days and within its 6-month validity period.

Where does the 18-month motorcycle-course reduction apply?

It applies after M2, before the second road test for full M: normally the wait is 22 months, reduced to 18 months with a recognized motorcycle safety course. It does not shorten the minimum 60-day M1 period.

What happens after an unsuccessful M1 knowledge attempt?

DriveTest does not publish a fixed wait for an ordinary unsuccessful attempt. If the candidate retries within the 1-year result-validity period, only sections that did not meet MTO standards must be repeated. A person removed for cheating or disruption receives an unsuccessful result and must wait until the following day.
