Sanitation vs. disinfection vs. sterilization
Sanitation removes visible dirt and lowers bacterial counts but does not kill pathogens. Disinfection destroys most disease-causing organisms on non-porous surfaces using EPA-registered chemicals. Sterilization is the highest level, destroying every microorganism including bacterial spores, usually via autoclave. Most cosmetology tools require cleaning then disinfection, not full sterilization.

Apprentice, esthetician, manicurist, and natural hair care licenses renew annually by October 1.
