Frequently Asked Questions
Which Alabama cosmetology examination does this flashcard set cover?
It covers the PSI National Cosmetology Theory Test used in Alabama, specifically the V1.0 outline effective May 1, 2026. It does not replace preparation with the separate PSI National Cosmetology Practical Test; Alabama's cosmetologist licensure path requires candidates to pass all required examinations.
How many questions are on the Alabama cosmetology theory test?
PSI delivers 110 questions: 100 scored questions and 10 unscored experimental questions. Candidates receive 120 minutes, and the theory test is closed book.
What score is required to pass the Alabama cosmetology examinations?
The current PSI guide requires at least 70% on the National Cosmetology Theory Test and at least 70% on the separate National Cosmetology Practical Test. PSI and ABOCB do not publish a current candidate pass-rate percentage.
How were the 50 cards allocated across PSI's theory blueprint?
Each published weight was multiplied by 50. This gives 15 Safety and Infection Control; 10 Client Consultation and Analysis; 1 Hairstyling; 1 Haircutting; 5 Haircoloring; 6 Chemical Texture; 2 Skin Care; 2 Eyelash and Eyebrow; 4 Hair Removal; and 4 Nail Care cards. Consultation and Haircutting both had a 0.5 remainder, so the single remaining card went to the larger official domain, Consultation (19% versus 3%).
What education is required before Alabama cosmetology testing?
A cosmetologist candidate must be at least 16, have completed at least the 10th grade or equivalent, and complete either 1,500 school clock hours or 3,000 apprenticeship clock hours. PSI states that school and apprenticeship hours may not be combined. ABOCB must approve the examination application before PSI scheduling.
When may an Alabama cosmetology candidate retake a failed examination?
Under Rule 250-X-6-.01 effective May 15, 2026, a candidate may retake as soon as the prior result is released, with no fixed day-based wait. All required examinations must be passed within the 24-month eligibility period measured from the original examination application date. If that period expires, the candidate must reapply and loses credit for any examination already passed.
Does Alabama still require 375 extra training hours after a third cosmetology exam failure?
No. The rule change effective May 15, 2026 removed the former three-attempt restriction and 375-hour retraining requirement. The controlling limit is now the 24-month eligibility period for passing all required examinations.
