Frequently Asked Questions
What does the TKT: Young Learners module actually test?
TKT: YL tests a teacher's knowledge of concepts related to teaching English to children aged 6 to 12: how young learners develop as language learners, how to plan and adapt lessons for them, how to teach and scaffold their language, and how to assess their progress in the classroom. It does not test the candidate's own English proficiency or observe live classroom teaching.
Is TKT: Young Learners pass or fail, and how is it scored?
No. TKT: YL has no pass/fail outcome. Performance on the 80-question paper is reported on a four-band scale, from Band 1 (limited knowledge) to Band 4 (extensive knowledge), and every candidate who completes the module receives a certificate showing their band.
Can I retake TKT: YL if I get a low band, and is there a waiting period?
Yes. Because TKT: YL is not pass/fail, there is no owner-imposed waiting period or limit on the number of attempts - you can resit the module as many times as you like to try to improve your band. In practice, your next attempt depends on when your authorised exam centre next offers the module, not on a mandated embargo from Cambridge.
What level of English do I need to take TKT: Young Learners?
Cambridge recommends candidates have at least an independent user level of English (CEFR B1) and are familiar with common ELT terminology, much of which is covered in the official TKT Glossary. Because the module tests teaching knowledge rather than English proficiency, advanced English is not required to do well.
What are the four parts of TKT: YL and how many questions does each have?
Part 1 (YL knowledge and principles) has 13 questions (16%); Part 2 (planning and preparing lessons) has 21 questions (26%); Part 3 (teaching young learners) has 33 questions (41%) and is the largest part; Part 4 (assessing YL learning) has 13 questions (16%), for 80 questions total.
