Earning your Virginia esthetician license is only the beginning of your regulatory relationship with DPOR. 18VAC41-70-120 through 18VAC41-70-160 govern fees, renewal, reinstatement, and endorsement. 18VAC41-70-280 outlines disciplinary grounds. Biennial Renewal — No Continuing Education Required

Virginia esthetician licenses expire two years from the last day of the month in which the license was issued (18VAC41-70-140). If your license was issued on March 15, 2024, it expires March 31, 2026.

The renewal fee is $120, paid with your renewal application before the expiration date (18VAC41-70-120). DPOR generally mails a renewal notice, but failure to receive the notice does not excuse late renewal. Monitor your status through the DPOR online portal.

Virginia does not require continuing education (CE) hours for standard esthetician license renewal. Do not assume CE rules from other states or professions apply. While voluntary advanced education is professionally valuable, it is not a renewal mandate for basic estheticians in Virginia. Instructor certificates and other credentials may have separate requirements—check the specific regulation for your credential type.

Reinstatement vs. Re-Licensure

If you miss the renewal deadline, consequences escalate quickly:

The $240 reinstatement fee includes the $120 renewal fee plus a $120 reinstatement fee (18VAC41-70-120). After two years past expiration, reinstatement is not available. You must meet current initial licensure requirements, which may include retaking examinations if your passing scores are older than five years.

When a license is reinstated, you keep the same license number. The new expiration date is assigned from the reinstatement month.

Endorsement (Reciprocity) for Out-of-State Licensees

18VAC41-70-30 provides licensure by endorsement for practitioners already licensed elsewhere. To qualify without examination, you generally must demonstrate:

1. A current, valid esthetician license in another U.S. state or territory
2. Completion of training or apprenticeship substantially equivalent to Virginia's 600-hour program
3. Passing both a written and practical examination substantially equivalent to Virginia's NIC exams
4. Good standing in all jurisdictions (no unresolved discipline)

Applicants whose home state uses only one licensing exam may take the missing Virginia exam portion to complete endorsement. For examination eligibility, 18VAC41-70-20 allows applicants with non-equivalent out-of-state training to document three years of licensed work experience and then sit for Virginia's exams. For endorsement without re-examination, 18VAC41-70-30 requires substantially equivalent training and exams; DPOR's current transfer guidance (Rev. 01/05/2026) states that Esthetics or Master Esthetics applicants who completed less than 80% of Virginia's required hours are not eligible for license by endorsement. Confirm your pathway with DPOR before assuming experience alone waives examination.

The endorsement application fee is $120, the same as initial licensure. Submit license verification directly from the issuing board—not merely a photocopy of your wallet card.

Administrative Duties After Licensure

Licensed estheticians must comply with ongoing administrative rules:

• Display your license conspicuously at each work location (original or duplicate for multiple sites)
• Report name or address changes to the Board in writing within 30 days
• Operate only under the legal name printed on the license
• Maintain good standing—disciplinary actions in any state must be disclosed on future applications

Working with an expired license constitutes unlicensed practice, a serious violation subject to fines and criminal referral in egregious cases.

Disciplinary Process and Penalties

When complaints or inspections reveal violations, DPOR investigators may conduct unannounced spa visits. The Board can convene an Informal Fact-Finding Conference (IFFC) or accept a Consent Order where the licensee admits violations and pays assessed penalties.

Disciplinary actions under 18VAC41-70-280 include:

• Monetary penalties up to $2,500 per violation
• Probation with conditions
• Suspension for a defined period
• Revocation of the license

Common violation triggers include sanitation failures, scope-of-practice breaches, unlicensed practice, fraud in applications, and failure to report address changes within 30 days.

Fee Summary for Exam Reference

Keep a personal calendar of your expiration date and budget for renewal annually—even though billing is biennial—so a missed notice never puts your livelihood at risk.

Inactive Practice and License Lapses

Practicing with an expired license is unlicensed practice, subject to cease-and-desist orders and penalties. If you step away from the profession, renew on time or formally understand reinstatement costs before your license lapses beyond two years—after that window, you may need to retrain or retest.

Endorsement Pitfalls

Endorsement is not automatic. Boards in other states must send primary source verification directly to Virginia. Training hour deficits cannot be cured by paying a higher fee. Endorsement requires substantially equivalent hours and exams; if you are under the 80% threshold for esthetics, plan on additional schooling and/or Virginia examination rather than endorsement alone. Plan months of lead time when relocating.

Consumer Complaints and Public Records

DPOR maintains public license lookup tools. Disciplinary orders, consent agreements, and suspensions appear on your record and can affect hiring at reputable spas. Ethical practice and meticulous sanitation are the best long-term career investments.

Duplicate Licenses for Multiple Locations

Estheticians working at more than one spa must obtain duplicate licenses from DPOR for each additional location where services are performed. Display the duplicate at that site just as you would your primary credential. Employers should verify that every practitioner on the schedule holds a current, unrestricted Virginia license before assigning clients.
