Frequently Asked Questions

What score do I need to pass the Virginia esthetician exam?

You must score at least 75% on both the theory (written) exam and the separate hands-on practical exam. Both are graded independently, and you must pass each one to become licensed.

How many questions are on the Virginia esthetician theory exam?

110 multiple-choice questions in 90 minutes. Ten of those items are Virginia-specific state law questions (based on 18VAC41-70), while the rest cover the national NIC Esthetics blueprint's Scientific Concepts and Skin Care & Services domains.

What happens if I fail the Virginia esthetician exam?

Per Prov's official candidate bulletin (effective 9/27/2025), failed exams can be retaken as often as necessary with no mandatory waiting period - you can schedule the next available test date immediately. You do have to pay the exam fee again each time ($99 for the written exam, $95 for the practical), and you cannot retake a section you have already passed unless required by the Commonwealth.

Do I need an employer to sponsor my Virginia esthetician exam?

No. Candidates register and pay for their own exams directly through Prov, Inc. at provexam.com after completing their required training hours - there is no sponsorship requirement.

What training do I need before I can sit for the Virginia esthetician exam?

You need to complete an approved 600-hour esthetics training program, or a 2,000-hour apprenticeship, under the Virginia Board for Barbers and Cosmetology's regulations (18VAC41-70) before you are eligible to test.
