Score Reports, Applications, and Retakes

The current TOEFL report uses a 1–6 scale for Reading, Listening, Writing, and Speaking, in half-band increments. The overall score is the average of the four section bands, rounded to the nearest whole or half band. During the two-year transition after January 2026, the report also provides a comparable overall estimate on the legacy 0–120 scale.

Interpret the report correctly

Programs set their own requirements. Check both the overall minimum and every section condition. A 5.0 overall does not prove that all four sections are 5.0, and a strong section cannot erase a program's stated minimum in another section. Confirm whether a program accepts MyBest scores and whether its posted number refers to the current scale or a legacy comparable total.

MyBest combines the highest valid section scores from TOEFL iBT tests taken within the prior two years. The receiving institution decides whether to accept it. Keep a dated requirements table and save the relevant admissions policy for your records.

Availability and validity

ETS says scores from the current test are available in the account about three days after the test date. The downloadable PDF normally becomes available one day after electronic scores are posted. Delivery to recipients takes additional time and varies by electronic or other channel, so a three-day account estimate is not a promise that an application file will be updated in three days.

Scores remain valid for two years from the test date. Programs may require the score to be valid at application, review, or enrollment, so ask when the wording is unclear.

Recipient planning

The test fee includes up to four official score reports when recipients are designated under ETS's deadline. The current bulletin and online account govern the exact cut-off; make changes early rather than relying on a last-hour interpretation. Ordering more reports after the included selections carries a fee. ETS currently lists $29 per additional report, but fees can change by location and date, so confirm the account total before purchase.

Use the exact institution and department codes requested by the recipient. Verify the application name and identifiers so the institution can match the report. A receipt showing that ETS sent a score is not the same as confirmation that the program attached it to the application.

Score review

Speaking and Writing score reviews may be requested within the current deadline, generally 30 days, if eligibility conditions are met. A review is unavailable after scores have already been requested or sent to an institution or agency. ETS currently lists $80 for one section or $160 for both, and the review can raise or lower a score. Confirm the live fee and eligibility before ordering.

Reading and Listening do not use this review process. A review is not a substitute for checking whether a recipient accepts MyBest or a comparable legacy total.

Retakes

ETS's current policy allows repeated testing but prohibits taking TOEFL iBT more than once within a three-day period. Attempting to register inside that interval can lead to cancellation or fee loss. Programs may consider the highest single administration, MyBest, the latest score, or another policy; ask the program.

Choose a retake using evidence. Compare section profiles and task-level errors. If the shortfall is localized and there is time to practice, schedule after a meaningful preparation block. If the deadline is near, first calculate account availability plus recipient delivery and application processing. More attempts without a changed plan do not guarantee improvement.

Current fees and optional services

ETS currently lists $49 for express registration, $69 to reschedule, $20 to reinstate canceled scores, and $129 for express scoring, in addition to the reporting and review fees above. These amounts are time-sensitive and may not apply identically everywhere. Treat the official fee page and checkout screen as controlling.

An application workflow

Before testing, verify requirements and select recipients. After testing, monitor the account rather than estimating a band from memory. When scores post, compare each condition, download the report, and track recipient delivery. Contact the program with identifiers if matching is delayed. If considering review or retake, check deadlines and the effect of already sending scores first.

Precise records prevent avoidable errors: test date, expiration date, overall and section bands, comparable total, MyBest profile, recipient code, order date, and application status. Score reporting is a logistics process as well as a language result.
