1.3 TOEFL iBT 1-6 Score Scale & Score Reporting

Key Takeaways

  • Tests taken on or after January 21, 2026 receive Reading, Listening, Writing, Speaking, and overall scores from 1 to 6 in half-point increments.
  • The overall score is the average of the four section bands rounded to the nearest whole or half band.
  • A 1-6 band represents a range rather than a one-to-one legacy score conversion; ETS supplies the comparable 0-120 overall estimate on the official report.
  • TOEFL scores remain valid for two years, and current scores are normally posted to the ETS account about three days after testing.
  • ETS does not set a universal passing score; each institution or program chooses its own overall and section requirements.

The Current 1–6 Score Scale

For TOEFL iBT tests taken on or after January 21, 2026, ETS reports a Reading band, Listening band, Writing band, Speaking band, and overall band on a 1–6 scale in 0.5 increments. The common scale makes the section profiles easier to compare and aligns each band with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

The overall band is the arithmetic average of the four section bands, rounded to the nearest whole or half band. For example, Reading 5.5, Listening 5.0, Writing 4.5, and Speaking 5.0 average to 5.0. ETS’s examples show 5.125 rounding to 5.0 and 5.25 rounding to 5.5.

CEFR alignment

TOEFL bandCEFR level
6.0C2
5.0–5.5C1
4.0–4.5B2
3.0–3.5B1
2.0–2.5A2
1.0–1.5A1

These are proficiency alignments, not admissions decisions. A C1-aligned result does not by itself guarantee readiness for every graduate course, teaching role, license, or visa. Score users decide which evidence and thresholds fit their purposes.

Comparable legacy scores

During the two-year transition after January 2026, official reports also include a comparable 0–120 overall score estimate. ETS publishes the following overall concordance starting points:

Current bandComparable total range begins at
6.0114+
5.5107+
5.095+
4.586+
4.072+
3.558+
3.044+
2.534+
2.024+
1.512+
1.00+

A band spans a range, so it is wrong to invent a single exact old score for each band. It is also unnecessary for a candidate to calculate the estimate: the official report displays it. When an institution still lists a 0–120 requirement, compare the report’s supplied estimate and confirm the institution’s current policy.

Raw scores and scaled bands

ETS’s test overview lists raw-score ranges of 0–30 for Reading, 0–30 for Listening, 0–20 for Writing, and 0–55 for Speaking before conversion to the common band scale. Writing’s 20 raw points correspond to ten one-point sentence reconstructions plus two constructed tasks scored from 0 to 5. Speaking contains eleven responses, each with a maximum task score of 5.

Do not convert a practice percentage directly into a band. Reading and Listening are adaptive and include scaled estimation; productive responses use task-specific scoring guides. Official practice tools are the appropriate source for reported practice performance.

What the report includes

The report includes the selected test date’s section and overall scores and MyBest information. MyBest combines the highest valid section scores from TOEFL iBT administrations in the preceding two years. If a current-scale report includes older results, ETS handles the scale conversion within the report. Institutions decide whether to accept MyBest, so verify that policy rather than assuming.

ETS says current official scores are available in the test taker’s account about three days after the test date. A downloadable PDF is normally ready one day after the electronic scores arrive. Recipient delivery takes longer and varies by channel.

Validity and target setting

TOEFL scores remain valid for two years from the test date. After that, ETS will not report or verify them. Application programs may impose their own rule about whether the score must be valid on the application date, review date, or enrollment date; check directly.

There is no universal passing score. Build a target sheet with one row per program and separate columns for the overall requirement, every section minimum, whether MyBest is accepted, the latest acceptable test date, and whether the requirement is shown on the current 1–6 scale or the older 0–120 scale. This prevents a strong overall band from hiding a section shortfall.

Finally, interpret descriptors as evidence, not labels of personal worth. A section profile is most useful when it points to a specific next step: more lexical-form practice for Reading, stronger implied-meaning work for Listening, clearer elaboration for Interview answers, or more accurate and cohesive language for Writing.

A safer score-planning example

Suppose a program requires a 5.0 overall and at least 4.5 in every section. A report of Reading 5.5, Listening 5.0, Writing 4.0, and Speaking 5.5 averages to 5.0 after rounding, but it still misses the Writing minimum. Record both conditions. If another valid test has Writing 4.5, MyBest might satisfy the profile only if that program accepts MyBest. This example shows why an overall concordance row cannot replace section-by-section review. Keep official reports and recipient policies together, and never infer eligibility from a practice raw score alone.
