South Carolina Life & Health Insurance Exam

Welcome to the South Carolina Life & Health Insurance study guide. To sell life or health products in South Carolina you must hold a resident producer license in the Life line, the Accident & Health (Sickness) line, or both. The license is issued and regulated by the South Carolina Department of Insurance (SC DOI) under Title 38 of the South Carolina Code of Laws, and the qualifying examination is delivered by Pearson VUE.

What the license authorizes

A producer (the modern statutory term that replaced the older word "agent") may solicit, negotiate, and sell insurance only in the lines of authority printed on the license. The two relevant lines here are:

• Life — individual and group life, annuities, and most variable-life products (variable products also require FINRA securities registration).
• Accident & Health (Sickness) — individual and group health, disability income, Medicare Supplement, and long-term care.

A common trap: candidates over-study national theory and lose easy points on the 30 uniquely South Carolina rules — such as the 30-day mail-order free-look or the DOI's market-conduct authority. Even though the state block is smaller, it is dense, predictable, and high yield-per-hour, so do not neglect it.

Exam Structure, Fees, and Pre-Licensing

South Carolina offers the Life and the Accident & Health lines as separate exams or as a single combined sitting. Each standalone exam follows the same 85-question / 75-scored format; the combined exam is longer.

Pretest questions are unscored items the vendor is field-testing; they are scattered among the scored items and are indistinguishable, so answer every question. South Carolina reports results on a scaled score where 70 is passing rather than a raw percentage, but as a rule of thumb roughly 70% correct of the scored items clears the bar.

Fees and retakes

The examination fee is $59 per attempt, paid to Pearson VUE at registration. If you fail, you may retake the same exam, but you must wait at least 24 hours and pay the full fee again. You may attempt any single exam up to six times within a one-year period; an online OnVUE attempt is limited to one try per exam before you must test in person.

Pre-licensing education

South Carolina imposes no mandatory pre-licensing education — no required classroom hours, no approved-provider mandate. The hours below are recommendations, not law:

Even though optional, a structured course raises pass odds, walks you through complex annuity and disability concepts, and supplies full-length practice exams. Worked example: a candidate scheduling the combined 140-question exam should budget roughly 64 seconds per question to finish the 130 scored and 10 pretest items inside 150 minutes — pace tracking matters more on the combined sitting than on a single 85-item exam.

Reserve your seat through pearsonvue.com or by phone at (877) 759-5226. You may choose a physical Pearson VUE test center or a remote OnVUE online-proctored session taken on your own computer. Online sessions require a webcam, a quiet private room, and a system check before launch.

What to bring and expect

• One valid, unexpired government-issued photo ID whose name matches your registration exactly.
• Arrive 30 minutes early for in-person testing; late arrivals may forfeit the fee.
• No personal items — phones, notes, smartwatches, and bags — are allowed in the testing room; lockers are provided at centers.
• An on-screen calculator and erasable noteboard are supplied; you may not bring your own.

Results are scored immediately and you receive a printed (center) or downloadable (OnVUE) score report before you leave. A passing report does not by itself make you licensed — it is one prerequisite among several.

Mandatory fingerprinting

Since January 1, 2017, every individual resident applicant must submit electronic fingerprints for a state and FBI criminal background check.

Nonresident applicants licensed in their home state generally rely on that home-state vetting and are not re-fingerprinted by South Carolina. A trap to avoid: fingerprints have a limited validity window, so do not pass the exam and then delay your application for months — stale prints force a re-capture and re-fee.

Application, Renewal, and Continuing Education

From passing score to issued license

After you pass, follow this sequence:

1. Receive the score report from Pearson VUE (keep it; some submissions require it).
2. Submit the license application through the NIPR gateway (nipr.com) or directly to the SC DOI.
3. Complete fingerprinting so the background check can clear.
4. Pay the license/application fee required by the DOI.
5. License issued after DOI review of the application and background results.

Renewal cycle

South Carolina resident producer licenses renew biennially on the last day of the producer's birth month, with the renewal year tied to whether the birth year is odd or even. Letting a license lapse can force reinstatement steps and, if lapsed long enough, re-examination.

Continuing education (CE)

Resident producers must complete continuing education each two-year cycle:

A course may not be repeated for credit within 2 calendar years of its first completion. As of May 2022, producers who hold a license for 25 or more years AND are 65 or older may apply for a CE exemption through the DOI. New producers must still verify their first reporting deadline — a frequent licensing trap is assuming the first cycle is a full two years when the prorated first period can be shorter.
