2.2 Reading Comprehension on NMAT Verbal

Alongside word analogies, reading comprehension (RC) is a core item type on the CEM Verbal subtest (30 items, recommended ~30 minutes for the whole Verbal block). Official descriptions emphasize that Verbal measures verbal reasoning and inferential and analytical abilities. Passages may draw on social, scientific, medical, philosophical, or literary material. You are not expected to be a specialist in every field; you are expected to use the passage.

What RC is really testing

RC items ask whether you can:

  • Extract the central claim without drowning in examples
  • Distinguish stated detail from reasonable inference
  • Read tone and purpose (inform, argue, qualify, criticize)
  • Apply a principle from the passage to a new case that stays faithful to the text
  • Avoid importing outside knowledge that contradicts or goes beyond the passage

That last skill is critical for pre-med applicants. Biology majors often over-answer scientific passages with lecture memory. If the passage never says it, it is not free evidence.

Question families and how to attack them

1. Main idea / primary purpose
Ask: If I had to title this paragraph, what claim would the title encode? Wrong answers are often too narrow (one example), too broad (a whole field), or half-true (mentions a detail but misses the point).

2. Detail / "according to the passage"
These should be locatable. Scan for a unique noun or number, reread that sentence, then match. Paraphrase is fine; contradiction is not.

3. Inference
Must be strongly supported though not always word-for-word. Good inferences are one small step from the text. Bad inferences are leaps (always, proves, the author hates).

4. Tone / attitude
Collect evaluative adjectives and hedging (merely, unfortunately, promising, speculative). Neutral science writing is often cautious, not celebratory.

5. Application / analogical extension
Take a rule or relationship from the passage and test a new scenario. The new case must fit the same conditions the author used.

6. Structure / function of a sentence
Why is this sentence here? Example? Concession? Transition? Definition?

Active reading under time pressure

Verbal time is shared with analogies. You cannot leisure-read every passage twice. Use a one-pass active method:

  1. First sentence and last sentence of each paragraph — often claim and wrap-up.
  2. Structural signposts: however, therefore, for example, in contrast, critics argue, the study found.
  3. Mark the claim (mentally): What is the author trying to establish?
  4. Mark the support: data, example, mechanism, authority.
  5. Note hedges: may, suggests, is consistent with — these kill extreme answer choices later.
  6. Do not pause to solve vocabulary mid-passage unless the word is the pivot of the argument; context usually suffices.

Target discipline: if a passage-plus-questions cluster is burning more than about 1–1.5 minutes per question including reading, skip remaining hard items, bookmark, and return after faster analogies or easier RC.

Scientific and medical passages without domain expertise

Treat technical prose as logic with nouns:

  • Define from context: "X, a signaling molecule released by Y…" — you now know what X is for this item.
  • Track roles: cause, effect, inhibitor, control group, exception.
  • Respect modality: "may contribute" ≠ "is the sole cause."
  • Diagram lightly: A → B, inhibited by C is enough; no need for full pathway recall from class.
  • Refuse outside facts: Even if you know the Krebs cycle, if the passage discusses only oxygen debt in muscles, do not import unrelated pathways.
