Unlike year-round PE exams such as Civil or Mechanical, Control Systems is a single-day, once-per-year event because the examinee population is small. The NCEES Control Systems page currently lists the next test date as April 14, 2027. If you miss that seat, or fail it, you are typically waiting for the next annual administration—not for the next Tuesday.

That calendar is why this chapter starts with logistics instead of transmitters. A once-yearly 85-item exam with a new Effective Beginning April 2027 specification rewards people who memorize the current contract: question count, appointment timing, domain ranges, scoring rules, and what is not published. It punishes people who study an older October 2022 blueprint, who treat a practice bank as if it were the real exam length, or who wait to “see how the afternoon module goes.” There is no afternoon module. You work all 85 questions.

NCEES designed the PE for engineers with a minimum of four years of post-college work experience in the discipline. Eligibility is board-specific: your state or territorial licensing board decides whether you may sit, whether you must already hold Fundamentals of Engineering / Engineer-in-Training (FE/EIT) certification, and what additional application fee it charges. NCEES states that the exam includes 85 questions and that the exam appointment time is 9.5 hours. The 9.5 hours is a package, not 9.5 hours of scored items:

Two timing traps show up every year. First, skipping the 50-minute scheduled break does not give you 50 extra minutes of exam time. The scored clock is already 8.5 hours; the break is a separate, optional pause inside the appointment. Second, 510 minutes ÷ 85 questions is 6.0 minutes per item, not the FE-style two-minute cadence and not “9.5 hours ÷ 85.” If you budget as if you had 570 minutes of question time, you will be 60 minutes optimistic.

Five domains with ranges, not quotas

The 2027 specification lists five knowledge domains. Each domain is published as a range of questions, not a fixed count. A live form can sit anywhere inside those ranges so long as the exam as a whole contains 85 items. Do not memorize a single integer as “how many measurement questions I will see.”

The midpoints sum to 88, not 85. That is expected: midpoints of independent ranges are a study-weighting tool, not a claim that NCEES will hand you 20 + 22 + 18 + 14 + 15 items. If you have 100 focused study hours, a midpoint allocation is about 23 hours on Measurement, 24 hours on Control Systems, 20 hours on Final Control Elements, 16 hours on Signals, Transmission, and Networking, and 17 hours on Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS)—then you adjust after a diagnostic, not after a rumor that “SIS is always 12.”

The exam uses both the International System of units (SI) and the U.S. Customary System (USCS). A flow problem may arrive in gallons per minute on one item and cubic meters per hour on the next. Scoring: no published passing percentage

NCEES does not publish a passing percentage and does not publish a raw number of items you must get right. Per the NCEES exam-scoring process, your result is the number of correct answers (no deduction for wrong answers), converted to a scaled score that adjusts for small difficulty differences across forms. That scaled score is compared with the minimum ability level for the exam, set by subject-matter experts (SMEs) using psychometric methods. First-time and repeat examinees are graded to the same standard. There is no curve that “fails 40% of the room” and no easier cut for a retake.
