Galvanic Current Modalities: Polarity, Cataphoresis, Anaphoresis & Desincrustation

Electrotherapy refers to the clinical application of specialized electrical currents, known as modalities, to produce therapeutic, rejuvenating, and cleansing effects on the skin and scalp. Each modality utilizes an electrode (an applicator constructed of glass, metal, or carbon) to safely transfer electrical energy from the machine to the client's tissue.

1. Galvanic Current Fundamentals & Polarity

Galvanic Current is a constant, uninterrupted Direct Current (DC) that flows in one direction, featuring a low voltage and safe milliampere amperage. It is the primary modality used in cosmetology to induce deep chemical changes and ionic product penetration within the skin.

Galvanic machines rely on strict polarity (the positive or negative electrical state of an electrode):

• Anode (Positive Pole): Usually colored red, marked with a plus sign (+). Anodes attract negative ions and repel positive ions.
• Cathode (Negative Pole): Usually colored black, marked with a minus sign (-). Cathodes attract positive ions and repel negative ions.

2. Iontophoresis: Cataphoresis vs. Anaphoresis

Iontophoresis (also called ionization) is the process of introducing water-soluble, charged treatment products deep into the skin's epidermal layers using galvanic electrical current. Like magnetic charges repel (positive repels positive; negative repels negative), pushing active ionic ingredients past the skin's barrier.

3. Desincrustation: Saponification of Sebum

Desincrustation is a specialized clinical application of galvanic anaphoresis used to deep-cleanse oily, acne-prone, or congested skin before manual extractions:

• Chemical Formulation: An alkaline, negatively charged solution (typically formulated with sodium bicarbonate or sodium carbonate) is applied to the client's face.
• Electrode Setup: The cosmetologist holds the active negative electrode (cathode) against the client's skin, while the client holds the inactive positive ground electrode (anode).
• Saponification Chemistry: The negative galvanic current pushes the alkaline solution deep into the follicular pores. The current and alkali react chemically with the solidified fatty acids and sebum, undergoing saponification (the exact chemical process used to manufacture soap):

Solidified sebum (fatty acids) + alkaline solution + galvanic current -> soluble soap (easily extracted)

• This chemical transformation liquefies hardened sebum and cellular debris within blackheads (comedones), allowing them to be extracted effortlessly without causing mechanical trauma to the follicle walls.

Light Therapy, Electromagnetic Spectrum, LED Chromotherapy & Contraindications

1. The Radiant Electromagnetic Spectrum

Light therapy (phototherapy) is the application of specific light rays to the skin for therapeutic and aesthetic treatments. All radiant energy travels through space in wave patterns at the speed of light (186,000 miles per second). The complete range of this radiant energy is the Electromagnetic Spectrum.

Natural sunlight is composed of three primary radiant energy bands:

1. Visible Light (35% of Natural Sunlight): The radiant energy that is visible to the human eye, spanning wavelengths from approximately 400 nanometers (violet) to 700 nanometers (red) (the visible rainbow spectrum: Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet).
2. Invisible Infrared Light (60% of Natural Sunlight): Radiant energy with long wavelengths (above 700 nm) located beyond the red end of the visible spectrum. 3. Absolute Contraindications for Electrotherapy & Light Services

Cosmetologists must conduct a thorough client consultation and medical health intake prior to administering any electrical or light therapy modality. The following conditions represent Absolute Contraindications where electrotherapy services must never be performed:

• Pacemakers or Implanted Cardiac Defibrillators: Electrical currents can interfere with cardiac timing mechanisms, causing fatal arrhythmias.
• Epilepsy or Seizure Disorders: Pulsing light frequencies or electrical currents can trigger epileptic seizures.
• Pregnancy: Electrical currents may adversely affect fetal development.
• Metal Implants, Pins, or Plates: Metal is a highly efficient conductor that concentrates electrical current, leading to severe internal thermal tissue burns.
• Cardiovascular Disease / Severe Hypertension: Current modalities alter vascular dilation and blood pressure.
• Open Wounds, Active Skin Infections, or Severe Rosacea/Couperose: Electrical stimulation exacerbates broken capillaries and inflames compromised skin barriers.
• Photosensitizing Medications: Clients taking drugs such as Isotretinoin (Accutane), Retin-A, or tetracycline antibiotics must avoid light therapy due to severe phototoxic burn risks.
