The Five Themes of Geography

Location has two forms. Absolute location is an exact position given by coordinates or a street address. Relative location describes where something is in relation to other places ("south of Canada").
Human-Environment Interaction is best understood through three verbs: people modify the environment (clearing forests, building cities), adapt to it (heating homes, planting drought-tolerant crops), and depend on it (fishing, farming, mining). This is the geographic home for these concepts, so keep environmental-modification questions here rather than treating them as history.
The Global Grid: Latitude and Longitude
The Earth is mapped with an imaginary grid of lines.
- Latitude lines (parallels) run east to west and measure distance north or south of the Equator, which is 0 degrees latitude. They divide the globe into the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.
- Longitude lines (meridians) run north to south and measure distance east or west of the Prime Meridian (0 degrees longitude, running through Greenwich, England). The Prime Meridian and the 180-degree line divide the globe into the Eastern and Western Hemispheres.
- Coordinates are always stated latitude first, then longitude (for example, New York City is roughly 40 degrees N, 74 degrees W).

Map Elements and Types of Maps
Every well-made map contains standard elements, often remembered by the acronym TODALS (Title, Orientation, Date, Author, Legend, Scale). For grades 1-6 the essentials are:
- Title - tells what the map shows.
- Compass rose - shows orientation and the cardinal and intermediate directions (N, S, E, W, NE, etc.).
- Scale - the ratio of map distance to real distance (for example, 1 inch = 10 miles).
- Legend / key - explains what symbols and colors mean.
- Grid - lines (often latitude/longitude or letter-number coordinates) for locating places.
Map types differ by purpose:
- Political maps emphasize human-made boundaries: countries, states, capitals, and cities.
- Physical maps show natural features such as mountains, rivers, and elevation, usually with color shading.
- Thematic maps display a single subject such as population density, climate, or rainfall. A topographic map is a thematic map that uses contour lines to show elevation and terrain.
Geographic Tools and Social-Studies Skills
Geographers use globes (the only accurate model of the round Earth, distortion-free), maps (flat, portable, but distorted), and Geographic Information Systems (GIS), which layer data digitally for analysis. Aerial photography and satellite imagery are also core tools.
Competency 0002 also tests general social-studies skills:
- Reading graphs and charts. Bar graphs compare quantities across categories; line graphs show change over time; pie/circle graphs show parts of a whole; tables organize data in rows and columns.

The Five Essential Elements of Geography
Beyond the five themes, the National Geography Standards describe five essential elements that organize what geographically literate students should know: (1) The World in Spatial Terms - using maps and tools to understand location; (2) Places and Regions - the identities and meanings of places; (3) Physical Systems - climate, landforms, ecosystems; (4) Human Systems - population, culture, settlement, and economic activity; and (5) The Uses of Geography - applying geographic understanding to the past, present, and future. Teachers weave these elements through units so students see geography as a way of thinking, not just memorizing places.
Teaching Map Skills Across Grades 1-6
Map instruction is developmental. Early primary students begin with spatial vocabulary (near, far, left, right, above, below) and simple maps of the classroom or neighborhood, learning that a map is a bird's-eye view drawn from above. By grades 3-4 students read a compass rose, use a legend, and apply a scale to estimate distance.
