The supply list requires a minimum of six nail tips, and states in bold that you "MUST bring tips as specified to receive credit for this section of the exam." Separately, three nail tips must already be applied to the mannequin hand before you arrive, with a free edge not exceeding 1/8 inch — those three pre-applied tips are what receive the wrap and acrylic procedures later.

Common Point Losses in Part III

  1. Choosing a tip that is too small and forcing it — flattens the C-curve, and the examiner sees a tip resting on the sidewall skin.
  2. Filing the tip to fit after gluing instead of before. Alter the shape first.
  3. Flooding the well with adhesive, producing squeeze-out onto the cuticle.
  4. Rocking too fast, trapping air and leaving white spots.
  5. Over-blending into the natural plate — visible as a shiny thin band or a ring of fire.
  6. Leaving too much or too little length: the finished free edge must land between 1/4" and 1/2".
