It is also Part V of the practical examination, the longest part at 30 minutes, with 18 evaluated tasks. If you allocate study time in proportion to the official curriculum, acrylic gets more of it than anything else.

Section 6.1 covered the chemistry — monomer, polymer, initiators, and the polymerization reaction. This section covers what you physically do with it: building a nail over a form with no tip underneath, maintaining it as the natural nail grows, and taking it off without destroying the plate.


Sculpting Over a Nail Form

A sculptured nail is built directly onto a form — a disposable adhesive template or a reusable metal template positioned under the free edge — with no plastic tip involved. It produces a thinner, stronger, better-fitting extension than a tip-and-overlay, because the technician controls the entire architecture.

  • Snug under the free edge. A gap lets product seep beneath the plate.
  • Level with the natural nail. A form angled downward produces a drooping extension; angled upward, a ski jump.
  • It must not cut into the skin. This is an explicitly scored practical task and a genuine injury risk at the lateral folds and hyponychium.

[!IMPORTANT] The practical scores your beads. Task 4 of Part V requires "appropriately sized small, medium and large balls formed by dipping brush into liquid, then powder" and that "all acrylic balls are of appropriate consistency so that they adhere to brush / do not fall off brush when bringing brush to nail." A bead that drops off the brush on the way to the nail is a visible, scored failure.

Placement Sequence

  1. First bead at the free edge. Task 5: "Acrylic ball(s) will be placed on the free edge of the tip and worked from the free edge area toward the nail bed."
  2. Subsequent beads from the center outward. "Worked from the center of the nail toward the sidewalls and cuticle."
  3. Dab, do not brush. Task 6: "the brush is held parallel to tip and dabbing or patting strokes, rather than brushing strokes, are used." Brushing drags the product thin and streaks it; patting lets surface tension level it.
  4. Nothing touches the cuticle or skin. Task 7.
  5. Keep the dappen dishes covered when not in use. Task 8 — and monomer evaporation is a real air-quality issue, not just a scored item.

Structure: Apex, Stress Area, C-Curve

  • The apex is the highest point of the enhancement, sitting over the stress area — roughly where the free edge leaves the nail bed. It is the arch that carries load.
  • The finished nail must be thinner toward the cuticle, the free edge, and the sidewalls, producing a natural C-curve (Task 13). Thickness at the cuticle line is the classic beginner signature and it lifts within days.
  • The finished nail must be symmetrical and of similar length and shape to the other nails (Task 14).

Curing and Finishing

  • Remove the form only when the nail is thoroughly dry. The test is acoustic: it "makes a clicking, hollow sound when tapped with the brush handle" (Task 9).
  • Remove the inhibition layer with a file only. Task 10 is unambiguous: "only a file may be used; alcohol and acetone may NOT be used." The tacky inhibition layer is uncured monomer at the surface; wiping it with solvent on the practical exam costs the task.

The 2-Week Fill (Rebalancing Procedure)

Every 2 to 3 weeks, new natural nail growth appears in Zone 3 near the cuticle line.

  1. Sanitize & Inspect: Check for product lifting, cracking, or bacterial pocketing.
  2. Level the Growth Line: Gently file down the raised edge of the existing acrylic or gel product at Zone 3 until it tapers flush into the new natural nail growth.
  3. Dehydrate & Prime: Apply dehydrator to the exposed natural nail growth plate. Apply primer ONLY to the bare natural nail area (do not apply primer over old acrylic).
  4. Zone 3 Product Refill: Place a small medium-dry bead of product onto the new growth area, stroking it smooth toward the existing enhancement while maintaining a 1/16th inch margin from the cuticle skin.

The 4-Week French Backfill (Smile Line Repositioning)

For pink-and-white French enhancements, 4 weeks of growth shifts the white smile line forward onto the nail bed.

  1. Carve New Smile Line: Use an e-file or hand file to carve away the overgrown white acrylic/gel in Zone 1 and Zone 2, carving a crisp new smile line trench.
  2. Refill White & Pink: Apply fresh white product into Zone 1 to construct a sharp smile line. Apply pink or clear product over Zone 2 and Zone 3 to complete structural rebalancing.

Structural Apex Maintenance & Stress Zone Reinforcement

As the natural nail grows forward, the structural apex (highest point of arch sculpted in Zone 2) moves forward toward the free edge extension.

  • The Stress Zone Hazard: An overgrown apex shifts the center of gravity forward, leaving the stress line unsupported. Any downward impact on the free edge acts as a lever, snapping the enhancement and tearing the natural nail bed.
  • Apex Rebalancing Rule: During every fill service, the technician must file down the overgrown forward apex and sculpt a new apex centered directly over the stress line of the natural nail bed.

Safe Removal of Enhancements

Removal is where the most permanent damage happens, because it is the step technicians rush.

Acetone Soak-Off — The Only Correct Method

  1. Reduce the bulk. File the surface of the enhancement down with a coarse abrasive or an e-file to break the sealed top layer so solvent can penetrate. Do not file into the natural plate.
  2. Protect the skin. Apply a barrier — petroleum jelly or a heavy cream — to the surrounding skin. Pure acetone strips the acid mantle and produces cracked, painful skin around the nail.
  3. Soak. Immerse the nails in 100% acetone, or wrap each nail with an acetone-saturated cotton pad and foil. Acrylic typically needs 20 to 30 minutes; hard gel often will not dissolve at all and must be filed off.
  4. Wait, then wipe. When the product has turned to a soft paste, push it off gently with a wooden pusher. If it resists, re-soak — do not scrape.
  5. Rehydrate. Buff lightly with a fine abrasive, apply cuticle oil and hand cream. The plate has just spent half an hour in a powerful solvent.

[!CAUTION] Never pry, clip, or force an enhancement off. Levering a lifted acrylic off with a pusher or nipper — or letting a client pick one off — tears layers of keratin out of the nail plate with it. The result is the thin, flexible, white-pitted plate that clients blame on "acrylic ruining my nails." The acrylic did not ruin them; the removal did.

Removal Contraindications

  • Do not soak a client with an open wound, active infection, or broken skin around the nail.
  • Diabetic and neuropathic clients may not feel solvent irritation developing. Shorten soak time, barrier the skin thoroughly, and check the skin visually rather than relying on the client to report discomfort.
  • Onycholysis under an enhancement — a separated plate with a cavity beneath — means stop and refer. Never re-apply product over a separated nail bed; you seal a moist pocket where Pseudomonas thrives.

Refilling over a lift without correcting the cause traps moisture and microorganisms under the product. The correct response is to file the lifted product away entirely, inspect the plate, and rebuild.
