8.2 Microsoft 365 Apps Deployment and Update Channels

Quick Answer: On the last MS-900 outline there are three primary Microsoft 365 Apps update channels: Current Channel (newest features as soon as they are ready), Monthly Enterprise Channel (features once a month on a predictable Patch Tuesday), and Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel (features only twice a year after more testing). Deploy the suite with Click-to-Run from the cloud (Office CDN), the Office Deployment Tool and a configuration file, or Microsoft Intune. Beginning with Version 2606 in July 2026, Microsoft unifies Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel into Monthly Enterprise Channel. Microsoft 365 Apps — Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and the rest of the desktop suite — do not use Windows Update as their primary train. The last official Skills measured date is April 30, 2025. That outline still expects the three-channel story Microsoft published for years. After the exam retired on March 31, 2026, Microsoft continued to change the product. You will see both facts in this section, labeled clearly.

The three channels the exam still tests

Official Learn still introduces three primary update channels:

Current Channel is the default for Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise and Microsoft 365 Apps for business, and for the subscription desktop apps for Project and Visio. Choose it when the business value is "give people the newest features when Microsoft is ready," not "we must name the Tuesday." Current Channel usually gets new features at least once a month, but Microsoft does not promise a calendar date. Current Channel (Preview) and the Microsoft 365 Insider Beta Channel exist for early looks. Beta is unsupported and belongs on a few test machines, not the help desk's production image.

A given Current Channel version is supported only until the next version ships — typically about a month. That is the trade-off for being first: you stay current, or you fall out of support.

Monthly Enterprise Channel is the enterprise answer when the scenario says predictable monthly features. Features that land here have already appeared for everyone on Current Channel and met extra release criteria, so a new Current Channel capability can lag a month or more before Monthly Enterprise Channel receives it. Updates publish on the second Tuesday of the month. Official support for a given Monthly Enterprise version is three months, with three months of rollback, so administrators can reverse a bad build without leaving security behind.

Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel, on the exam contract, is the slow-feature channel. Features arrive only in the January and July drops. Monthly packages in the other ten months are security and quality. Official Learn used to position it as a conservative enterprise default; more recent Learn text reserves it for non-interactive devices and specialized or business-critical workloads that need a long test runway. Support duration was shortened to eight months beginning July 2025 (it had been fourteen). If a question says "we must test add-ins for months before users see new Excel features," Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel is still the outline's answer.

Rules that trip people:

• A channel is per device, not a badge that follows the user from laptop to conference-room PC.
• A device can have only one channel. Word, Visio, and Project on that PC share it.
• Different groups can use different channels. That also means two coworkers can see different features in Excel, which can complicate training and support.
• Teams and OneDrive have their own update cadences. Do not say "Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel delays the Teams client."
• Volume-licensed Office LTSC (perpetual Office) is a different product with a PerpetualVL channel. It is not one of the three Microsoft 365 Apps channels.

Exam contract versus July 2026 product reality

Microsoft announced that beginning with the Version 2606 update in July 2026, it unifies Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel and Monthly Enterprise Channel into a single enterprise-focused channel. Official Learn's unification article is explicit:

• Devices still configured for Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel start receiving the same feature and security updates as Monthly Enterprise Channel from Version 2606.
• After 2606 is installed, Microsoft 365 Apps File > Account shows Monthly Enterprise Channel.
• Users should not see a workflow change. Existing policies and tools — Intune, Configuration Manager, Group Policy, Office Deployment Tool — keep working.
• Current Channel and its preview channels are not retired by this change.
• Organizations that need more time can stay on Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel Version 2508 through September 8, 2026 if they block 2606.

How to hold both facts in your head:

If you are sitting a practice item written to the last outline, do not delete Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel from the answer set. If you are advising a real tenant after July 2026, do not pretend Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel is still a long, twice-yearly feature freeze after 2606.

How organizations deploy Microsoft 365 Apps

Microsoft 365 Apps install with Click-to-Run, a streaming installer. The device pulls application bits from the Office Content Delivery Network (CDN) on the internet — or from a local source you prepared — and can start an app before every file has finished downloading. This is not the old Windows Installer (.msi) Office 2010 model, and it is not "install Office by passing MOS."

Three conceptual deployment methods show up in fundamentals conversations:

The Office Customization Tool at config.office.com is the web UI that writes the configuration file the ODT and Intune consume. ODT modes you might see named in documentation are download (pull source files), configure (install, remove, or change), and customize (app preferences only). You do not need to memorize XML attributes for MS-900. You do need to know that channel is a configuration choice, not a second installer.

Admins can also set a tenant-wide default for self-installs in the Microsoft 365 admin center under Microsoft 365 installation options, and they can change a device's channel later with Intune, Group Policy, Cloud Update, or another supported method. Changing channel can add or remove features the user already learned — another reason organizations stage Office the way they stage Windows.

Microsoft recommends letting most devices update from the Office CDN and using Delivery Optimization so the WAN does not melt when a new build appears. Availability of a new CDN build is advertised over several days worldwide, which is another staggered-rollout idea, just implemented by Microsoft instead of by your ring spreadsheet. Configuration Manager can wrap the same Click-to-Run bits in a software-update workflow if the organization already lives there.

A user can confirm the channel on a PC by opening Word (or another desktop app) and choosing File > Account. The channel name, version, and build appear under product information. A version number change means features arrived; a build-only change means security or quality landed on the same version.

What MS-900 is really testing

Read the scenario for speed of features, not for brand loyalty.

• "Newest Outlook features as soon as Microsoft ships them" → Current Channel.
• "One monthly, scheduled feature drop on Patch Tuesday" → Monthly Enterprise Channel.
• "Line-of-business add-ins need months of testing; features only twice a year" → Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel on the exam outline.
• "How do we actually put Word on 5,000 Intune-enrolled laptops?" → Intune Microsoft 365 Apps assignment (Click-to-Run), not a MOS class and not a Windows Server DVD.
• "IT needs an XML file that sets 64-bit, Current Channel, and no Publisher" → Office Deployment Tool / Office Customization Tool.
• "Users install from office.com and get updates from Microsoft's network" → Click-to-Run from the Office CDN.

Do not confuse these Microsoft 365 Apps channels with:

• Windows General Availability / Insider / LTSC
• Windows deployment rings (those stage Windows feature updates)
• Office LTSC perpetual volume-license Office
• Teams or OneDrive client updates

And do not let the July 2026 unification erase the outline. The exam that existed asked you to name three channels and match them to cadence. The product that exists after Version 2606 merges the two enterprise channels. A good fundamentals answer can say both sentences.
