15.2 Support Options for Microsoft 365

Key Takeaways

  • Self-help comes first: Microsoft Learn, the Microsoft 365 community, Message center, Service health, and in-product Help & support articles close many issues without a human case.
  • If the tenant bought Microsoft 365 through a partner — especially a Cloud Solution Provider — that partner is the published first-line support path.
  • Microsoft’s included admin-center support is break/fix and how-to help for eligible direct customers; paid Microsoft Unified (the enterprise support family that replaced Premier) adds broader, contractual support and is not the same product as FastTrack.
  • FastTrack is a no-extra-cost deployment and migration benefit for tenants that meet current eligibility — commonly 150 or more qualifying paid licenses — and is not a break/fix support plan. App Assure is the compatibility assistance offering for Windows, Microsoft 365 Apps, Edge, Azure Virtual Desktop, and Windows 365.

Quick Answer: Start with self-help (Learn, community, Message center, Service health, Help & support articles). If licenses came from a CSP or other partner, that partner is first-line support. Microsoft support in the admin center is the included break/fix path for tenants that can reach it. FastTrack (typically 150+ eligible paid licenses) is a deployment and migration benefit — not a break/fix plan. App Assure helps when a business app breaks on Windows, Microsoft 365 Apps, Edge, Azure Virtual Desktop, or Windows 365.

The April 30, 2025 outline asks you to describe support options for Microsoft 365 services. The exam is not asking you to quote Unified price lists. It is asking you to pick the right kind of help for the stem: a how-to article, a partner, a Microsoft ticket, a deployment specialist, or an application-compatibility engineer.

Self-help is a real support option

Microsoft documents self-service as the first layer, not as a consolation prize.

Self-help surfaceWhat it answersWhat it is not
Microsoft Learn and Microsoft 365 admin documentationHow a feature is supposed to workA live outage board
Microsoft 365 community / Microsoft Q&A / Tech CommunityPeer and Microsoft-moderated how-toA contractual SLA claim
Message centerUpcoming changes, planned maintenance, required admin actionsWhether Teams is down this hour
Service healthActive incidents and advisories Microsoft is workingYour WAN or a single misconfigured mailbox
Help & support suggested articles and diagnosticsGuided fixes before a human joinsA substitute for an admin role

If the stem is “Microsoft is retiring a feature next quarter,” the support option is Message center, not FastTrack. If the stem is “is this a known Exchange incident,” the option is Service health. Candidates who jump to “open a Sev A” on every sentence miss easy points.

Partner support, especially CSP

Chapter 14 already covered how organizations buy Microsoft 365 (Enterprise Agreement, CSP, direct). Support follows the commercial path. Official Get support text is the scoring key again: if all subscriptions were bought through a partner, contact the partner. CSP partners are expected to handle customer billing, subscription changes, and first-line technical support, and they escalate to Microsoft through Partner Center when they have the right GDAP relationship.

A tenant can have a mix: some seats direct from Microsoft, some from a partner. The published “at least one Microsoft-bought subscription” rule is what unlocks Microsoft support in the admin center. MS-900 will usually keep the story clean: all partner → partner; direct Microsoft → admin-center support.

Partners are also the published path for work that Microsoft FastTrack lists as out of scope (custom networking, some on-premises design, product work FastTrack will not do for you).

Microsoft support plans, conceptually

Every eligible paid Microsoft 365 tenant that can reach Microsoft gets included support through the admin center: technical how-to, break/fix, billing and subscription questions for direct customers. That included channel is what section 15.1 taught you to open.

Enterprises that want a named support relationship, proactive reviews, or contractual support beyond the included path buy a Microsoft support plan. The current family name you will hear is Microsoft Unified (it succeeded Premier Support). Unified is an enterprise support contract: incident management, solution-specific engagements, and paid support scope defined in the Unified terms. You do not need Unified to open a normal Microsoft 365 admin-center case, and buying Unified does not replace Service health or Message center.

Keep three contracts separate in your head:

  • Included Microsoft 365 support — admin-center Help & support for eligible direct customers.
  • Microsoft Unified / paid support — a support agreement you purchase.
  • FastTrack — a deployment benefit included with eligible licenses, not a support plan you buy to get faster break/fix.

Official FastTrack pages even say FastTrack may recommend self-guidance, Microsoft Unified, or a partner when a request is outside FastTrack scope. That sentence is the exam’s hint that these are different doors.

FastTrack is deployment help, not break/fix

Microsoft’s FastTrack introduction calls FastTrack a benefit that helps organizations learn, prepare, and deploy Microsoft 365, Copilot, security workloads, and data migration, at no extra cost on a new or existing qualifying subscription. Specialists give remote, guided assistance. FastTrack guides also appear through Copilot in the Microsoft 365 admin center and on the web.

Eligibility (verify on the current Learn page, which Microsoft updated May 2026): FastTrack deployment guidance is available for customer tenants with 150 or more licenses for Copilot, Security, Migrations, and most Microsoft 365 workloads. Those licenses can be a standalone product (for example Microsoft 365 Copilot) or a suite (for example Microsoft 365 E3). You must purchase at least 150 licenses per tenant from the published eligible-plan list (Microsoft 365 Enterprise, Business Premium, Education A3/A5, EMS, Entra, Intune, Windows 365, and related SKUs on that page). Extra notes on the same page: Copilot assistance also needs at least one Copilot license; Windows 365 assistance also needs at least one Windows 365 license (purchased or trial); Intune Suite assistance also needs at least one Intune Suite or add-on license on top of the 150 Intune-eligible licenses. Plans that are not on the list are ineligible.

You request help with a Request for Assistance (RFA) in the Microsoft 365 admin center or the Microsoft 365 setup portal. FastTrack languages currently listed include English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish, and Mandarin Chinese.

What FastTrack is not:

  • It is not the desk you call because Outlook cannot send mail this morning. That is Service health plus Microsoft or partner support.
  • It is not a paid Unified incident contract.
  • It does not purchase, license, or activate products for you (Intune FastTrack documentation states that limit explicitly).
  • It is not guaranteed for a 20-seat Business Basic tenant that is under the 150-license bar.

App Assure

Official FastTrack documentation describes App Assure as a service that addresses Windows and Microsoft 365 Apps compatibility issues. The same page states it is available to all Microsoft customers. You request it with the App Assure service request form. Published coverage includes Windows 10/11 (including Arm64), Microsoft 365 Apps (including Copilot channel-move issues), Microsoft Edge, Azure Virtual Desktop, and Windows 365 Cloud PC.

App Assure is still not break/fix for Exchange mail flow, not a replacement for Intune packaging of every line-of-business app, and not a promise that Microsoft will rewrite your source code. Customers remain responsible for inventory and validation. If a finance add-in worked in Office 2016 and breaks after a move to Microsoft 365 Apps, App Assure is the matching option. If nobody can join Teams because of a service incident, it is the wrong option.

Realistic exam-style scenarios

Twenty-seat shop. A Business Standard tenant with 20 licenses wants Microsoft to fly in engineers and migrate file shares. They are under the published 150-license FastTrack bar for most workloads. Point them at self-help deployment guides, a partner, or paid help — not “FastTrack is included with every Microsoft 365 seat.”

Two hundred E3 seats, first Teams rollout. The tenant meets the 150+ eligible-license test. Submit a FastTrack RFA for deployment guidance. If Outlook is also down that morning, that outage still goes to Service health and support, not FastTrack.

CSP invoice. Billing looks wrong and every subscription is CSP. The option is the partner, not Unified and not App Assure.

Add-in after a Windows 11 upgrade. A certified line-of-business add-in fails only after the move to Windows 11 and Microsoft 365 Apps. App Assure matches. FastTrack might still help with the broader Windows 365 or Intune deployment, but the compatibility promise sits with App Assure.

Enterprise wants a TAM-style relationship. Leadership wants proactive reviews and a contractual support program beyond included tickets. That is Microsoft Unified (or another paid support agreement), not FastTrack and not Message center.

Exam traps

  • FastTrack ≠ support plan. It is a deployment / migration benefit for eligible tenants.
  • 150 licenses is the current published FastTrack floor for most workloads — verify the eligibility page if Microsoft updates the list.
  • Partner-only purchases go to the partner.
  • App Assure is compatibility, not mail-flow break/fix.
  • Message center is change news, not a live incident desk.
  • Unified is paid enterprise support, not the 150-license deployment benefit.
  • Self-help counts. Learn, community, and the admin-center assistant are official options.
