Configure Table Style Options

Key Takeaways

  • Table Style Options live on Table Design and control Header Row, Total Row, Banded Rows, First Column, Last Column, Banded Columns, and Filter Button
  • Banded Rows is usually on by default; Banded Columns and First/Last Column emphasis are off unless you enable them for readability
  • Clearing the Header Row check box removes header formatting and AutoFilter arrows but does not delete the header text cells
  • The Filter Button toggle hides or shows dropdown arrows without converting the table back to a normal range
  • MO-210 tasks often say configure style options rather than pick a gallery style—verify every requested check box on Table Design

Why table style options matter on MO-210

Domain 3 of Exam MO-210 (Manage Tables and Table Data) expects you to create tables, apply table styles, and configure table style options. Creating the table and picking a gallery style are covered in other sections. This section focuses on the Table Style Options group on the Table Design contextual tab—the check boxes that change how the table behaves and looks after it exists.

On a performance project you will see wording such as "Display banded columns for the Sales table", "Turn off the filter buttons in the Inventory table", "Show the Total Row", or "Emphasize the first column of the Products table." Those instructions map to check boxes, not to Format Cells or conditional formatting. Graders look for the option state on the table object, so a visual guess that looks similar is not enough if the wrong box is checked.

Where the controls live

  1. Click any cell inside the Excel table so the contextual ribbon appears.
  2. Select Table Design (sometimes labeled Table depending on ribbon layout).
  3. Find the Table Style Options group on the left side of that tab.

The check boxes are typically:

OptionWhat it does
Header RowShows the header row with column names and (by default) filter arrows
Total RowAdds a summary row at the bottom with dropdown aggregate functions
Banded RowsAlternating row shading for easier scanning
First ColumnBold/emphasis formatting on the leftmost table column
Last ColumnBold/emphasis formatting on the rightmost table column
Banded ColumnsAlternating column shading
Filter ButtonShows or hides AutoFilter dropdown arrows in the header

You must select a table cell first. If you click outside the table, Table Design disappears and you cannot change these options until you click back in.

Header Row toggle

Header Row is almost always on for tables you create with Ctrl+T when the dialog option My table has headers is checked. Clearing Header Row removes header formatting and the filter arrows. The text that was in the header cells usually remains as ordinary values in what is now the first data row of a headerless table—Excel does not delete those labels when you uncheck the box.

Exam traps:

  • Unchecking Header Row is not the same as converting to a range (Table Design → Convert to Range).
  • Unchecking Header Row is not the same as hiding row 1 with Hide.
  • If a later task says "filter the Region column," you need Header Row and Filter Button both enabled (or you must re-enable them).

Total Row toggle (preview)

Checking Total Row inserts a summary row at the bottom of the table. Each total cell can use SUM, AVERAGE, COUNT, and related functions through a dropdown—covered in depth in the Total Rows section. For style-option tasks, the grader may only require that Total Row is checked, with no specific aggregate yet. Still click inside the table, open Table Design, and verify the box before moving on.

Banded Rows and Banded Columns

Banded Rows is the default readability aid: alternating fill on data rows. Banded Columns does the same across columns and is off by default. Tasks that say "apply banded columns" or "remove banded rows" are pure check-box work—do not recreate striping with Format Painter or conditional formatting, or you may fail the automated check even if the sheet looks striped.

If both Banded Rows and Banded Columns are on, shading can look busy. Follow the project text exactly: enable only what it asks for.

First Column and Last Column

First Column and Last Column add emphasis (often bold) to the edge columns. Use them when a project says "emphasize the first column" or "format the last column so it stands out." These options do not freeze panes, do not create a new calculated column, and do not change structured-reference syntax. They only change style emphasis tied to the table style.

Common mix-up: students bold column A with Home → Bold instead of checking First Column. Manual bold may look right but may not satisfy a style-options check that expects the Table Design flag.

Filter Button toggle

Filter Button controls whether dropdown arrows appear in header cells. Clearing it hides the arrows while the table remains a table. Checking it restores them. This is different from:

  • Data → Filter on a normal range (AutoFilter without a table),
  • Clearing filters that are already applied (that clears criteria, not the arrows),
  • Converting the table to a range (which removes table behavior entirely).

A task that says "hide the filter arrows" or "remove filter buttons from the table" almost always means uncheck Filter Button, not convert to range.

Style gallery versus style options

The Table Styles gallery (right side of Table Design) changes the overall color theme. Table Style Options refine that theme with the check boxes above. A project might ask for both: "Apply the Blue, Table Style Medium 2 style and display banded columns." Complete the gallery pick and the option check boxes. Doing only one of the two leaves the task incomplete.

Worked exam-style scenario

You have a table named Orders with headers Date, Region, Rep, Amount. Instructions:

  1. Turn off banded rows.
  2. Display banded columns.
  3. Emphasize the last column.
  4. Hide filter buttons.

Steps: click any Orders cell → Table Design → clear Banded Rows → check Banded Columns → check Last Column → clear Filter Button. Leave Header Row checked unless told otherwise. Do not change the gallery style unless asked.

Suggested practice sequence

  1. Create a small table from A1:D10 with headers.
  2. Toggle each Table Style Options check box and watch the table change.
  3. Hide filter buttons, then filter via Data tab if available—confirm arrows return only when Filter Button is checked again.
  4. Uncheck Header Row, note what happens to labels and filters, then restore Header Row.

Mastering these toggles is faster than restyling cells by hand and matches how Certiport scores Domain 3 style-option objectives.
