Add and Modify Chart Elements
Key Takeaways
- Use Chart Design → Add Chart Element (or the chart's + Chart Elements button) to show or hide titles, axes, legend, labels, gridlines, and data tables
- Replace the placeholder Chart Title with the exact text the project specifies
- Position the legend (Right, Top, Bottom, Left) as named—do not leave a default if the descriptor requires another placement
- Data labels and axis titles are separate elements; turn on the ones the task names and set any required label text
- Associate tasks stay on standard elements—avoid obscure formatting when the project only asks to add or modify an element
Why chart elements matter on MO-210
Still under Modify charts, Certiport expects you to Add and modify chart elements. Creating the right chart type is not enough if the title still says "Chart Title," the legend is missing, or data labels were never turned on. Graders can detect element presence, title strings, and common legend positions.
Typical wording: "Add the chart title FY26 Regional Sales", "Display the legend at the bottom", "Add data labels outside the end of each column", "Add a primary horizontal axis title Month", "Show major horizontal gridlines", or "Display the data table below the chart." The MOS path is Add Chart Element on the Chart Design tab, the Chart Elements (+) button beside a selected chart, or clicking an existing element to edit it.
The Add Chart Element menu (Associate scope)
Select the chart, then Chart Design → Add Chart Element. Associate-relevant groups include:
| Element group | Common exam options | What graders often check |
|---|---|---|
| Axes | Primary Horizontal / Primary Vertical On or Off | Axis visible when required |
| Axis Titles | Primary Horizontal / Primary Vertical | Title present and text matches |
| Chart Title | Above Chart, Centered Overlay, None | Exact title text |
| Data Labels | Center, Inside End, Outside End, None, etc. | Labels on; position if specified |
| Data Table | With Legend Keys, No Legend Keys, None | Table shown under plot |
| Gridlines | Primary Major Horizontal / Vertical | Major gridlines on or off |
| Legend | Right, Top, Left, Bottom, None | Position matches descriptor |
You may also see Error Bars, Trendline, or Up/Down Bars in the gallery. Use them only if the project names them; most MO-210 Associate bullets stick to titles, legend, labels, gridlines, and occasionally a data table.
The floating + (Chart Elements) next to the chart offers checkboxes and fly-out positions—equivalent outcomes when they produce the same element state the project describes.
Chart titles
- Add Chart Element → Chart Title → Above Chart (most common) or the option named in the task.
- Click the title placeholder and type the exact string from the project.
- Click outside the title to commit.
Spelling, spacing, and capitalization matter when the descriptor gives a precise title (Q3 Actual vs Target ≠ Q3 actual vs target if grading is literal). Do not leave the default "Chart Title." Do not put the title only in a worksheet cell above the chart unless the task says to use a cell as the title—Associate tasks almost always mean the chart's own title object.
Centered Overlay places the title on the plot area; use it when specified. None removes the title when a project says to remove or hide the chart title.
Axis titles
Axis titles are not the same as category labels. Category labels come from source data; axis titles are descriptive captions such as "Revenue (USD)" or "Month."
- Add Chart Element → Axis Titles → turn on Primary Horizontal and/or Primary Vertical as required.
- Click each axis title placeholder and type the required text.
If only one axis title is requested, do not invent the other. If axes themselves were turned off, turning on an axis title may not meet a task that also expects the axis line/labels—read the bullet carefully.
Legend
- Show or hide: Legend → Right / Top / Left / Bottom / None.
- Match the named position. "Move the legend to the bottom" fails if you leave it on the right.
- For a single-series chart, Excel sometimes omits a legend by default; if the project says to display a legend, turn it on explicitly.
- Editing legend entry text is usually done by changing series names in Select Data (previous section), not by typing on the legend in ways that break the link—prefer Select Data when the series name must change.
Data labels
Data labels show values (or other label contents) on points, bars, or slices.
- Add Chart Element → Data Labels → choose the position named (Outside End, Center, Inside End, Best Fit for pies, and so on).
- If the task only says "add data labels" without a position, any standard On state may work—but when a position is named, match it.
- To refine what labels show (value, category name, percentage), use More Data Label Options / Format Data Labels when the project asks for percentages on a pie or both category and value. Do not add leader lines or exotic number formats unless specified.
For pies, percentage labels are common in business projects; for columns, showing the value is common. Follow the wording (show percentages, show values).
Gridlines
Primary major horizontal gridlines often appear by default on column charts. Tasks may say add major vertical gridlines, display major horizontal gridlines, or remove gridlines. Use Add Chart Element → Gridlines and toggle the named set. Do not confuse gridlines with axis lines or with worksheet cell gridlines (View → Gridlines)—those are unrelated to the chart element.
Data table (Associate-appropriate)
A data table under the chart repeats the plotted values in a small grid beneath the plot area—useful for printouts. Add Chart Element → Data Table → With Legend Keys or No Legend Keys as specified. This is different from inserting an Excel table on the worksheet or from Select Data. Use it when the project explicitly asks for a data table on the chart.
Modifying existing elements
- Click the element (title, legend, label) to select it; drag a legend if the task allows repositioning by drag and you can still satisfy a named position—Ribbon position commands are safer for "legend at bottom."
- Format pane (Ctrl+1 or Format tab) can change fill/font; only go there when the project asks for formatting of an element (for example bold title) beyond mere presence.
- Deleting: select the element and press Delete, or set that element to None in Add Chart Element—both remove it.
Quick checklist against a multi-part bullet
Projects often stack requirements: Create a clustered column chart, add the title Monthly Output, place the legend at the bottom, and display outside-end data labels. Work in order:
- Confirm chart type and data (earlier skills).
- Set chart title text.
- Set legend position.
- Turn on data labels with the named position.
- Glance for extra unwanted elements only if the project said to remove something.
Common exam pitfalls
- Leaving the placeholder text "Chart Title" or "Axis Title."
- Putting title text in a worksheet cell and assuming that counts as the chart title.
- Choosing the wrong legend position (Top vs Bottom).
- Turning on data labels but ignoring a required position such as Outside End.
- Adding a trendline when the task only asked for gridlines or labels.
- Confusing worksheet gridlines with chart gridlines.
- Editing one data label's text into a static custom string when the project only wanted values displayed—customizing a single label can break consistency; use Format Data Labels for series-wide settings.
- Selecting a single series and adding labels only to that series when the task meant labels for the whole chart—click the chart carefully so the command applies as intended (whole chart vs one series).
Practice sequence
- Insert a clustered column chart; set Chart Title Above Chart to
Practice Revenue. - Add Primary Horizontal and Vertical axis titles; type
MonthandSales. - Move the legend through Right, Top, and Bottom; finish on Bottom.
- Add Outside End data labels; then switch to Center and compare.
- Toggle major horizontal and vertical gridlines; add a data table with legend keys, then remove it.
