Why chart sheets matter on MO-210

Still under Create charts in Domain 5, Certiport lists a separate skill: Create chart sheets. Many projects first ask you to insert an embedded chart, then immediately (or in a later bullet) move that chart to its own chart sheet with a specific tab name. Graders can detect both that a chart sheet exists and that it holds the expected chart.

Typical wording: "Move the chart to a new chart sheet named SalesChart", "Create a chart sheet called RegionalShare", "Place the pie chart on its own sheet named Q2 Chart", or "Move the clustered column chart to a chart sheet." The MOS path is Move Chart → New sheet, not Insert Worksheet followed by pasting a picture of the chart.

Chart sheet vs embedded chart

Understand the two homes a chart can have:

An embedded chart sitting on a worksheet named Charts is not a chart sheet. Renaming a data worksheet to SalesChart also does not satisfy "move to a chart sheet named SalesChart." The Move Chart dialog's New sheet option creates the chart sheet object Excel expects.

Create a chart sheet by moving an existing chart

Most Associate tasks assume the chart already exists as an embedded object:

1. Click the chart so it is selected (handles visible; Chart Design / Format tabs appear).
2. Open Move Chart:
   • Chart Design → Move Chart (Location group), or
   • Right-click the chart → Move Chart…
3. In the Move Chart dialog, select New sheet.
4. Type the exact sheet name required by the project in the New sheet box (for example SalesChart or Quarter Two Chart).
5. Click OK.

Excel removes the embedded object from the worksheet and places the chart on a new chart sheet tab with the name you entered. The chart still links to the same source data on the original worksheet—moving does not copy values into the chart sheet as static cells.

Naming rules that matter on the exam

• Match spelling, spacing, and capitalization to the descriptor when the name is specified (Q2 Chart ≠ Q2Chart ≠ q2 chart if the project is exacting).
• Chart sheet names follow workbook sheet-name limits (no duplicate names among tabs; avoid forbidden characters such as \ / ? * [ ]).
• If you mistype the name, rename the chart sheet tab afterward by double-clicking the tab (or right-click → Rename)—still acceptable if the final tab name matches before you finish the project.

Alternative: place as new sheet when changing location from Object in

The Move Chart dialog also offers Object in, which embeds (or re-embeds) the chart on a chosen worksheet. For create chart sheets, you need New sheet, not Object in. Use Object in when a task says to move a chart sheet chart back onto a worksheet, or to move an embedded chart from one worksheet onto another as an object—those are location changes, not chart-sheet creation.

Flow summary:

1. Insert chart → embedded on active sheet (Create charts).
2. Move Chart → New sheet → chart sheet (Create chart sheets).
3. Optional later: Move Chart → Object in → embed again on a worksheet if a project reverses location.

Creating "a chart sheet" when the project combines steps

Some descriptors collapse create + move into one instruction: "Create a pie chart on a chart sheet named RegionalShare using A2:B8." Efficient sequence:

1. Select A2:B8 on the data sheet.
2. Insert the pie chart (embedded).
3. Immediately Move Chart → New sheet → name RegionalShare.

You can also create a chart and move it before spending time on fine positioning on the data sheet—once it is a chart sheet, "below the table" positioning no longer applies on the data sheet because the object left that sheet.

There is rarely a need on MO-210 to start from a blank chart sheet and manually assign data with obscure legacy commands. Stick to insert-then-move unless a specialized instruction says otherwise.

Navigating and verifying chart sheets

After a successful move:

• A new tab appears with your chart sheet name.
• Activating that tab shows the chart filling the sheet view (zoom/view may differ from worksheet view).
• Chart Design and Format remain available when the chart is active—you can still change type, elements, and styles on a chart sheet.
• The original worksheet no longer shows that embedded object (unless multiple charts existed and you moved only one).

Verification checklist for the exam:

• Correct chart type still displayed after the move.
• Tab name matches the project.
• Chart reflects the intended source range (spot-check categories/series).
• You did not leave a duplicate embedded copy unless the project wanted two charts (uncommon).

Chart sheets and printing / presentation context

Chart sheets are often used so the chart prints or presents full page. Page Setup on a chart sheet still exists (orientation, margins), but Associate create-chart-sheet tasks usually stop at move + name. Do not change page setup unless asked. Do not delete the data worksheet thinking the chart sheet stores a data copy—it does not; deleting source data can blank or break the chart.

Multiple charts and which one to move

Projects with several charts say which one: "the pie chart on the Summary sheet" or "the chart titled Average Call Time." Select that specific chart before Move Chart. Moving the wrong chart to a beautifully named sheet still fails the step. If charts overlap, click carefully or use the Chart Filters / selection pane habits you use elsewhere—click the chart border so the whole chart is selected, not a single element only (selecting only the plot area can still work for Move Chart in many builds, but whole-chart selection is safest).

Common exam pitfalls

• Renaming the data worksheet instead of using Move Chart → New sheet.
• Choosing Object in and picking another worksheet when the task required a New sheet chart sheet.
• Misspelling the chart sheet name or adding extra spaces.
• Inserting a new blank worksheet and pasting a screenshot of the chart.
• Moving a chart, then wondering why "position below the table" failed—the chart is no longer on that sheet.
• Creating a second embedded chart after a move because you thought the first disappeared permanently from the workbook—it only left the worksheet; check the new tab.
• Confusing chart sheet with dashboard sheet layouts that still use embedded charts on a normal worksheet.

Practice checklist

1. Create a clustered column chart from a small range on Sheet1.
2. Chart Design → Move Chart → New sheet → name it PracticeChart. Confirm the tab type and that Sheet1 no longer shows the object.
3. Move Chart again → Object in → Sheet1 to re-embed; then move back to a new sheet named FinalChart to build fluency.
4. Intentionally use a wrong name, then rename the tab to match a fake project string such as Q2 Results.
5. With two embedded charts on one sheet, practice selecting only the pie chart and moving that one to PieOnly.
