Continuing Education Requirements

(1) The live-hour requirement is written backwards. The regulation does not say "earn 5 live hours." It says no more than 15 of the 20 annual hours may come from home study or other mediated instruction (247 CMR 4.03(4)(b)). The practical effect is the same — at least 5 hours per year must be live — but an item that asks what the regulation states wants the 15-hour home-study cap.
(2) The immunization hour is per cycle, not per year. Every other allocation in 247 CMR 4.03(4) is annual. The immunization hour in 4.03(4)(e) is the single exception: one contact hour during the two-year renewal cycle.
Structural Rules
- Daily cap. A registrant may not earn more than 8 contact hours of continuing education in a calendar day (247 CMR 4.03(7)). Hours beyond 8 on a single day are disallowed on audit.
- No carryover. Contact hours may not be carried over from one calendar year to another (247 CMR 4.03(5)). A pharmacist who earns 28 hours in 2027 still needs a full 20 hours in 2028.
- Graduation year exemption. A registrant is not required to complete continuing education in the calendar year in which he or she graduated from an approved college or school of pharmacy (247 CMR 4.03(8)).
- Extenuating circumstances. A registrant who cannot meet the requirement, or who because of a physical disability cannot comply with the home-study limitation, may submit a detailed statement under the penalties of perjury; the Board then decides whether to grant renewal (247 CMR 4.03(6)).
Approved Providers — 247 CMR 4.04
A person or agency that documents current programme approval from, and good standing with, either the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) or American Medical Association CME Category 1 is an authorized provider without separate Board action. Other providers must apply to the Board at least 30 days in advance of the programme date, and a denial may be appealed to the full Board by written petition within 30 days of the notice of denial.
